Why should you learn how to surf?

Surf is one of the most trendy activities now days. The number of people looking for the professional assistance of surf schools increases every year, specially during the summer vacations. Many people don't try it because they are scared of the ocean, but learning how to surf can be very easy if you do it in the correct place with the help of a qualified instructor.

Besides being a healthy activity, surf is also a lifestyle. Most surfers don’t even consider it a sport, but as something bigger that can dictate how they live their lifes. Some even say that surfing is like the mafia, once you are in there is no turning back. So here are some reasons why you should learn how to surf!

Surfing is a very healthy activity. While you are surfing you develop many muscles in your body and a lot of cognitive skills. Surf can improve your balance, your reflexes, your cardio and helps to prevent stress. Most surfers enjoy to wake up early and start the day with a nice surf session, which is scientifically proved to be a very healthy habit.

“Surfing soothes me, it’s always been a kind of Zen experience for me. The ocean is so magnificent, peaceful, and awesome. The rest of the world disappears for me when I’m on a wave.”

-Paul Walker-

The interaction with nature is another important part of the surf culture. Surfers are usually very active in preserving the environment. Most surfers feel a special connection with the ocean and will do everything they can to preserve it as healthy and beautiful as it should be. Now days there are many eco-friendly accommodations that try to minimise their impact on the environment and to make their guests more conscious about conserving nature.

“I think when a surfer becomes a surfer, it’s almost like an obligation to be an environmentalist at the same time.”

- Kelly Slater -

Most beginners start to surf because someone close to them teaches them how to surf. It’s a family thing that is passed over from one generation to the other. Many families have the tradition to go on a vacation every year exclusively to surf. It’s a moment to be together in a beautiful destination, sharing waves and doing what they love the most: surfing. But if you don’t have someone to teach you don’t worry, Nomad Surfers has many surf camps for you to choose from.

“Surfing alone is cool, but surfing with your family and friends is priceless.”

-John John Florence

Surfers are explorers by nature. Traveling to new places to find new waves is part of the process of learning how to surf. The amount of surf spots in the world are infinite and the pleasure of surfing a new break is hard to describe. Once you find your favorite spot in the world you will want to go back there over and over again to surf it. Anytime you want to travel, surfing is the perfect excuse to do it.

“For a surfer, it’s never-ending.

There’s always some wave you want to surf.”

- Kelly Slater -

Surf brings people together. Every surf session you can meet interesting people and have deep conversations while waiting for the next wave. When the surf is big, friends support and take care of each other out there. There is no better feeling than catching the best wave of the session knowing that your friends are watching and cheering for you. After all, friendship is all about sharing those precious moments.

“You can meet great people in the water during a surf session, if you are open for that.”

-Rob Machado-
