Nomad has been successfully organising teens Summer camps in the Algarve for over 15 years. During these last years we have seen the growing tendency of the children flying into Lisbon so we have decided to start a new operation in the best surfing area in Lisbon. If you wish to know more about our operation the past years and parent’s feedback please check the Nomad Surfcamp – Algarve.

The Nomad Lisbon Surf Camp is located in Costa Caparica, only 20 minutes from Lisbon International Airport. It is one of many vacation spots in central Portugal which is noted for its beauty and tourist possibilities.

Our Surf camp is right beside the beach (100 metres from the beach) and overlooks one of the best surf beaches. With a very long sand beach and perfect beach breaks; it’s an idyllic place for the practice and learning of Surfing. Hosting teens with ages of 12-18 years old from Russia, Italy, UK, France, Swizterland, Belgium, USA, Canada, Spain and other countries every year.

NEW this summer – SURF SAFETY – APNEA!

Certified APNEA instructors will teach you about what is happening in your body when you breathe and hold your breath is key to being relaxed in hold down situations. Learning breathing techniques that help prevent blackouts is vital for staying safe. Be safe and bring your surfing to a next level.

English and Portuguese Language Courses are also available for teens who wish to learn or improve their english during the stay, offered by a certified English teacher. The courses are having a lot of acceptance and very good results because the children learn in a relaxed environment and our programming focuses more on different areas non covered during the school. The Surf Courses are also taught in English so that the kids get used to it and learn in a relaxed and unconscious way.

You will never forget this experience!

THE ACCOMMODATION

The Summer Camp

The surf accommodation is 100 metres from the beach with a capacity to host 110 people at the same time at only 20 minutes from Lisbon International Airport. The teens are supervised by our staff 24 hours with medical assistance (first aids). The Surf camp entrance is closed during the night.

Every package includes meals, shared accommodation, two surf lessons per day and of course with the right to enjoy all the facilities that are included in the Surf camp (swimming pool, tennis court, ping pong table, free wifi, etc.) . All our Camps are mixed although the bedrooms distribution is by sex and age (12-18 years old). We try to room the teens by similar ages.

We encourage the parents to provide some pocket money for vending machine at the accommodation, supermarket, dinner out (twice), ice-creams, t-shirts, beach drinks, or extra activities not incuded, etc. They will also need money for the first day as only dinner is included and last day as only breakfast is included.

The Meals

The Strong Breakfast consists of fruits, orange juice, toasts, whole grain bread, jams, honey, milk, coffee, chocolate milk, ham, cheese, muesli and corn flakes. Lunches are served in a restaurant in front of the beach with everything the teens deserve, starter, main course, desert, water and juice. Extra snacks are available between meals (sandwich and fruits). Dinners are varied and include all the necessary nutrition for teenagers this age. No one will be left hungry!! They consist of Starter or Soup, Main course, and desert. Juices and water also included. We cater for Celiacs or Vegeterian teens as well. A kitchen is available if required.

For Parents

We have dedicated many years to the practice and teaching of surfing as qualified instructors, and we organised our first Teens Surf Camp in 1998 with great enthusiasm, specializing in minors. We know the responsibility that this entails, that is why the boys/girls will be controlled at all the times, in the surf lessons, extra activities and free time by our monitors, and will be always accompanied by teachers graduates, surfing, sports and recreation with the maximum security for them.

Our teens will sleep with monitors with experience in sports activities and outdoor games. They will be responsible for checking that the teens meet the standards of Surf Camp and make extra activities in the evenings. To you parents, which always concerned about is the safety of their children. Your children are monitored 24 hours per day by qualified instructors with a system of internal rules which must be followed.

As soon as they get to the Camp the teens can send you the monitors number so if you need anything you can contact directly.

MEDICAL PROCEDURES

The camp fees cover basic first aid care provided by our staff. Should your child require special care, medication or hospitalization, you will be fully responsible for all the costs incurred. In this case, we will make the following arrangements for any costs to be settled:

For small amounts, or where the care provider is not able to send invoices directly to your own insurance company, we will settle the costs from camp funds and send you an invoice. The care provider’s invoice will be sent to you should you wish to claim from your own insurance company.

For larger amounts, where direct settlement is necessary, we will supply the care provider with the details of your own insurance policy.

MEDICATIONS

The policy of the camp is that all medication must be brought from the house, if necessary buy with the authorization of parents or responsible is possible a trip to pharmacy accompanied by our monitors.

VISITING YOUR CHILD

We welcome visits to camp by children’s parents or guardians, but please consider how your visit will affect your child’s adjustment to camp life. If you would like to visit your child, please contact the camp monitor to arrange a time that is convenient both for the camp and for your child.

For obvious security reasons, we normally only allow visits from the parents or guardians named before. If you wish other family members or friends to visit your child(ren), please provide a written request to the camp monitor in advance of their visit.

HOMESICKNESS

If you receive a , email or telephone call from your child expressing concerns or strong feelings of missing home, you should telephone the camp monitor and discuss the situation. If your child is taking time to adjust to camp life, the Camp monitor will already be paying special attention and encouraging him/her to make new friends and join in with games and activities. The camp monitor will ask that you reinforce the same message with a positive reply. Let your child know that you understand the feelings but maintain confidence in his/her ability. Ask specific questions to help him/her to focus a reply.

With support from camp and home, most children, even those who seem extremely upset in the first few days of camp, can make it to the end of the session. The majority of these children will have enjoyed their stay and will feel a huge sense of achievement – some even wish they could stay longer!

In very rare cases, though, a shortened stay at camp may be considered as the only answer for a homesick child. You should discuss this with the camp monitor, and never suggest this to your child until a decision has been made. Once you show doubt that your child can make it through to the end of the camp, he/she may lose confidence in his/her own ability and give up trying if they feel that going home early is an option.

THE ACTIVITIES

Surf

The Surf Camp runs for 10 days, the day of arrival and departure is free of Surf, as everybody has different flight times, although teens can surf if they have their own material and if they stay for two different dates (20 or 30 days). The Surf Center is 10 minutes walking and 2 minutes by car from the accommodation. Every surf day they will practice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, for how long depends on the conditions, our goal is to have at least 3 hours per day. The other activities are focused to enhance your qualities for sport, improve your fitness and above all to have fun and live in this Surf Camp the best experience of your life!!

NEW this summer – SURF SAFETY – APNEA!

Your child will often be one of many children arriving at the airport or train station to be escorted to camp. Whilst our representatives will always try to arrange for onward transport to camp with the minimum of delay, it should be understood that your child may be required to wait at the airport or train station for up to two hours before he/she commences the onward journey, due to flight delays affecting other children and/or difficult traffic conditions.

Upon arrival at the destination airport or train station, your child should look for a Camps representative, who will be displaying a Camps sign. Airports and train stations can be quite crowded and hectic, you should instruct your child to wait at the airport’s or train station’s information desk should he/she not locate our representative on arrival.

By Air Plane

There is a lot of airline companies operating at Lisbon Portela Airport, providing both business class and low cost flights to tourists around the world. Thus, the airport is the operation site of about 40 airline companies, of which the most notable are Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Finnair, Easy Jet, Air France, Blue Air, British Airways and Brussels Airlines. These companies ensure the connection between Lisbon (and, by extension, Portugal) and virtually all corners of the world, linking the capital to destinations like Amsterdam and Paris, Madrid and Rome, London and Moscow, the Canary Islands, Bucharest, Philadelphia, Tunis, Tel Aviv, Cairo and so on.

By train

In terms of railway transport, the tourist and commercial platform of Lisbon is serviced by four main train stations: the Santa Apolonia (Estacao da Santa Apolonia), the so-called Rossio (Estacao do Rossio), Barreiro (Estacao do Barreiro) and Cais do Sodre (Estacao do Cais do Sodre).

The Santa Apolonia Train Station (Estacao da Santa Apolonia) is the largest of all, being located in the vicinity of the Alfama district. It is the main terminal for trains which ensure the connection between Lisbon and north and east Portugal, as well as between Lisbon and international destinations like Madrid and Paris.

For complete information on the trains arriving at or departing from each of the four stations of Lisbon, schedules, connections, ticket prices and the like, please visit Comboios de Portugal. The company can also be contacted at 808 208208 or by dialing 00351 707201280 (from abroad).

By bus

REDE NACIONAL EXPRESSOS

In terms of bus connections, Lisbon is fairly well linked to virtually the entire Portugal by means of the bus lines made available by the so-called Rede Nacional de Expressos. Thus, for instance, there are 9 buses a day covering the distance between Lisbon and Porto, 6 buses which ensure the connection between the capital and Lagos, and 14 buses transporting tourists between Lisbon and the north central Coimbra. The main bus station in Lisbon, at least as far as domestic bus trips are concerned, is Rodoviaria da Sete Rios (Sete Rios Bus Station). By car

Some might find it rewarding to get to Lisbon by car. This is, without a doubt, one of the most time-consuming manners of traveling to the capital of Portugal, first of all due to the city’s geographical location on the west coast of the country, and secondly because the first step of getting to Portugal is to cross Spain. The border between the two countries is pegged out by 15 checkpoints, so the alternatives are fairly reasonable, as far as their diversity is concerned. The border crossing process is also said to be, as a rule, quite smooth.

Depending on the direction from which tourists head for Lisbon, they can resort to several motorways and national and European roads. People who come from the south can take the A 2 Motorway, whereas the A 6 Motorway is recommendable for tourists coming from the east. Drivers who turn to these alternatives must be aware that they must also cross the 25 Abril Bridge in order to eventually reach Lisbon. Traffic can get quite sluggish on this bridge, especially weekdays.

The A 12 Motorway is the best solution for tourists who come from the north. They must also cross the Vasco da Gama Bridge (the longest bridge in Europe). The A 5 Motorway is advisable for visitors who travel from the west. However, sundry other combinations are, indeed, possible. Most of the motorways which connect Lisbon with the rest of the country are linked to at least one of the three ring roads of the capital.

In order to get familiar with the network of motorways, national and European roads of Portugal and make the most convenient decision in respect to what combination is the most suitable to each traveler’s holiday priorities, please visit Estradas de Portugal.

Children Travelling as Unaccompanied Minors

Most airlines offer an unaccompanied minor (UM) service to parents for children travelling alone. Generally, this service is offered to children 12 years and under, but some airlines extend this service to older children on request. Upon arrival at the destination airport, your child will be accompanied from the plane to the arrivals gate by an airport or airline representative, where they will be handed over to a Camps representative. For the return, your child will be accompanied to the plane by either a Camps or airport representative, depending on the airport’s policy.

If you wish your child to travel as a UM, you will be required to complete the airline’s Handling Advice for Unaccompanied Minors Form. Please complete this form for both the outward and return journeys and ensure that any charges levied by the airline are settled for the return journey to avoid any problems at the airport. While filling the UM form with your airline, they will require the name and phone number of our staff member meeting your child upon arrival at the airport. Please contact our office to obtain the required information.

LOW COST AIRLINES

If you book your child’s flight with a Low Cost airline, please be sure to check their age policy. Most Low Cost airlines have strict age requirements and will not let your child travel alone if he/she is not old enough.
