Nomad Surf Camps has been offering surf summer camps for kids in Algarve, Portugal since 2000. And this is actually the first surf summer camp for kids in Portugal.

Surfing is our passion and we want to share this with you. Our goal is to offer you the best summer holidays and surfing experience of your life, laughing and meeting people from all over the world who will become friends for life.

There is a maximum of 40 kids per week and the summer surf camp and is for boys and girls between 12 and 17. The accommodation for the teens is close to Vale Figueiras beach, a comfortable Surf house surrounded by nature, in the natural park of Algarve and only 1 hour from Faro International airport. The camps are 7 days although most kids stay for two weeks.

Surf Courses are split into three levels: total beginners who will learn the easiest way to surf and improve their technique, Intermediate surfers, and advanced surfers. Plenty of activities, prizes, gifts and lots of fun. We proud ourselves to be an international surf summer camp where English is mainly spoken. The children will be spoken to in English most of the time. We also offer English Language classes in the evenings (optional).

The team consists of qualified coaches, who speak several languages and all the elements are combined to provide kids with professional, pleasurable and efficient training. The Team has dedicated their life to surf and has over 15 years of experience in junior training

Our kids surf camp in Algarve

The surf house is located on the private property of 10,000 square meters in the Natural park of Alentejo. This friendly and safe surf summer camp for kids in Portugal can accommodate up to 40 teenagers. The camp consists of the main building with a big dining area and an outside area with swimming pool and skate ramp where the kids can play and have fun.

Food

Eating is one of the best pleasures and we know how important this is. The food is abundant and delicious. If a kid doesn’t like the food for any particular reasons we will make sure to cook him or her something else something of their taste.

Breakfast: Served at the surf camp, a delicious breakfasts buffet with freshly squeezed orange juice, fruit, different hams, bacon, cheese, different cereal, etc. Freshly Baked breads and Croissants. Vegetables and fruits: Salad, tomatoes and more. It’s amazing and one of the highlights of this camp!

Lunch: Picnic Lunches are given to each kid to take to the beach. 2 delicious sandwiches, a fruit of the season, chocolate, juices, and some other surprises.

Dinner: Dinners are provided at the Surfcamp.

We are a flexible surf camp and our main objective is that children have a great time and feel at home, or better!

The team in Algarve has dedicated many years to the practice and teaching of surfing as qualified instructors. so Nomad Surfers idealised the surf summer camp Portugal in the year 2000 with great enthusiasm, teaming up with great local surf school and operators and specialising in minors.

We know the responsibility that this entails, that is why the boys/girls will be supervised 24 hours both in the surf lessons and activities extras we developed for their free time, and also at all times by our monitors, and will be always accompanied by teachers graduates. Luis, . A fun but mellow personality who holds the greatest local knowledge in the region. Ask him anything about surfing or fishing in the area. A fantastic surf instructor!

Igor was one of the thousands of teenagers who attended the Nomad Surf camps. He fell in love with Surfing and later moved to Algarve where he has been a surf Instructor ever since for the Nomad surf camps. 🙂 He is part of the Russian Surfing team and is a real Frother.

The Kids’ Surf Lessons

The surf summer camp courses are split into three levels:

My first time surfing, or I only surf few times a year

Total beginners welcome!!

1st and 2nd Day.

Morning: Introduction to waves without surfboards, introduction with the surfboard always laying down. Afternoon: Practice balance, Timing, exercises to get up on the board in and out of the water.

Each participant will be recorded on video the first 2 days, and on the second day our coaches will sit with each person one on one to view the footage to identify the mistakes and discuss which things to work on during the remaining of the camp.

3rd and 4th Day.

Morning: Review the last part of the first days. Afternoon: Stand Up and Balance position.

5th and 6th Day.

Morning: Review the last part. Afternoon: Exercises of weight change from front leg to back leg, walking on board.

I can paddle on my own and stand up

Evaluation of each person to know in which level he or she has and which points to work on.

Program:

✔ Exercises on surf skate boards. Skate boards with front trucks that move laterally and specially designed to train rail to rail surfing.

✔ Paddling,

✔ Sitting on the board,

✔ Turning direction while sitting

✔ Explosive paddling,

✔ Paddle to the outside,

✔ Techniques to pass the waves while paddling out (Eskimo roll, etc),

✔ Catching green waves with the help of the coach pushing,

✔ Timing and reading of waves to know in which direction to paddle and when to get up.

✔ Surf green waves going left, surf green waves going right.

✔ Video analysis.

I surf short boards and want to get better

Our Portugal kids surf camp will take your surfing to the next level. The surf coach for Improvement level is Igor Volkov who has been in the Olimpic surf team for Russia.

Evaluation of each surfer to know exactly which level he or she has and which points to work on.

Program:

✔ Introduction to shortboards.

✔ Duck dives,

✔ Bottom turns,

✔ Turn on the top (re-entry),

✔ Trimming,

✔ Understanding tides and currents

✔ Introduction to reefs,

✔ Getting in and out of the water,

✔ Surfaris to secret spots.

The coach will be video recording and will correct you with an analysis at the beach and also at the surfcamp.

How are the waves?

If you are looking for the location in Europe with most consistent waves for surfing, stop searching. West Coast of Algarve is the place in Europe with most waves during summer (June, July, and August). Our beach (Vale Figueiras) is a beach break which offers the most ripplable waves. Doesn’t matter if its low, mid or high tide you will find a sand bank breaking. The best thing is that the beach is so big that you can always find yourself a wave to yourself with no crowd… all you need is to walk an extra 2 minutes along the coast.

Surfboard Shaping Workshop: Once every 10 days there is a workshop where we teach the kids how to shape, sand, and glass surfboards. We do the same process as if they were real surfboards but in miniature surfboards so they can take with them as a souvenir. They have a little hole on it so they can be a key chain, a necklace or just a little sculpture.
Beach Clean-Up: In between surf sessions, we organize a beach clean up, where the teenagers will have gloves and plastic bags to collect as much garbage as possible at the beach where we practice surfing. Every day the ocean throws thousand of kilos of plastics at many beaches around the world and this scenario is only getting worse. With this activity we try to show the kids how important it is to do our part and spread good practice to more and more people. We can not give up.

The last night of the week we throw a wild Dj Party. The highlight of the week at our Portugal kids surf camp.

Nature

Close by to the property there are stables with horses, cows, pigs, dogs, and our orchard. Kids will be surfing, doing sports and having fun but with the maximum security for them.

Language Courses

Our surf summer camp in Portugal offers optional Spanish and English Language courses. The classes are only one hour per day for five days from Monday to Friday in the morning before the surf lessons or in the afternoon so no one will miss out on any surfing. The classes are fun and most of the time they will be taught in the open air (Beach, fields, with the animals at the nearby farms, etc).

Where exactly is our teen surf summer camp in Portugal?

If you are looking for a kids surf camp in Portugal, there is no better location than Algarve! The Junior surf camp is only 1 hour by car from Faro airport. The Surf house is ideally located between nature and the wild Vale Figueiras Beach or Arrifana Beach where the surf courses take place. (hills, birds, cows and sheep). No houses, bars, or anywhere to walk to, apart from the beach. We have everything we need to keep our teens entertained at the surf camp.

The Algarve is situated on the most southern part of Portugal, stretching along the Atlantic between the Spanish border and Cabo Sao Vicente, Europe’s south western most point, enjoys a privileged climate all year round, in brightly colored and fertile surroundings covered with orange, fig, and almond groves.

The southern coastline is formed by a long stretch of fabulous beaches, only broken up by impressive reddish cliffs. The west coast is wilder and the sea rougher, with a string of solitary coves and beaches accessed through dirt tracks.

Languages classes

5 days of English Language classes 200 EUR. The classes are only 1 hour long. The objective is that children learn at least a handful of few important phrases of words per day.

Faro airport transfers

Faro Airport Pick up – 75 Eur per pereson per way.

Drop-offs at Airport on check out day at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm

We accompany kids that come and leave to FARO airport only, on the official dates of the camps. The responsible person going to be at he airport since 10:30 till 19:00 to meet kids on arrival and help on check in / leave kids at departure.

Transfers on different times or dates

The pick up and drop off out of dates, out of time (too early or too late), or in Lisbon airport is possible, but it will be provided by the transfers company. The driver will be waiting on the arrivals for pick ups and drop off kids at the departure, without making a check in with the kids. Only for the kids older than 14 years old.*

*Please verify with the airline company what is the allowed age to make check in without an accompanying by the adult.

"My daughter Beatriz, truly enjoyed her experience in the surf camp and I have been made aware she wants to do it again next year :) Food: They were always very generous with food and breakfast was lovely and with plenty of choice. They were given a picnic to take away in their afternoon outings and that was enough food to keep them up until dinner. Dinner was diverse and there were some lovely soups, which Bia always ate which is unlike her to eat soup. Accommodation: My daughter liked the accommodation, it was clean and had a wonderful view. "I had a great time at Vale Figueiras! The people are very nice, and everything is taken care of. We stayed at the surf resort, which is a really nice building with large rooms and a spectacular view. The food is homemade and delicious. The location is really remote, it is not possible to go anywhere without a car (although they can bring you anywhere if necessary). But, there is no need to go anywhere, cause you are surfing quite a big part of the day. The only negative part is that the yoga lessons, which you can take every day, are very expensive. We were not aware of this before we started with the lessons, so that was kind of an unpleasant surprise at the end of the week (although the yoga teacher herself is great).Besides this, I would really recommend a stay here!"

Meet people and learn to surf!

"My son went alone to this surf camp, as he wanted to meet people as well as learn to surf. I was a bit concerned as I had no references other than the information on internet, but I needn't have worried. He came home after 10 days having had an amazing time, learning the basics of surfing and with a great group of friends (both male and female) from all over the world. We live in Spain but his English is good, so this was the main language he used for communication, being with Swiss, French, Australian, Spanish, German,...people from all over! I saw the camp myself, it is quite out of the way in the wild countryside of Portugal, 5 mins from a beautiful and almost unused beach, so the group had it to themselves! The couple who own the camp were relaxed but perfectly in control of all the details, and their staff were young, friendly, mad on surfing, and their enthusiasm is contagious! There were different groups according to surf level, but everyone mixed outside of class time. My son is already planning when he can go back and hopefully meet up again with some of the friends he made this year. My daughter is desperate to become old enough to sign up too!"

"I had a great time at Nomad Surf resort in Vale Figueras ! Overall Portugal, their people and Nomad staff made my vacation something that I won't forget until next summer.... Everything is taken care really well, from pickup and delivery at the airport, stay at the camp with every minute filled with something organized, nice pool at the camp, organization at the beach managed by very responsable staff, surfing just fantastic and finally nice evenings & BBQs. FROM HER STORIES IT SEEMS YOU ALSO HAD A GOOD SURVEILLANCE OF THE YOUNGSTERS REGARDING THEIR SAFETY BOTH SURFING AND IN THE “FREE TIME“. HAPPY FOR THIS. ACTUALLY, THE ONLY THING I WOULD LIKE TO SAY, IS:I THINK THE PHOTO OPPORTUNITY WAS A BIT OUT OF PLACE. 100 EURO FOR FOTOS OF YOUR CHILD IS A LOT (EVEN IF YOU HAVE A REALLY BEAUTIFUL CHILD)... I THINK YOU COULD EASILY ADD A SUITABLE AMOUNT TO THE NORMAL EXPENSES AND INSTEAD MAKE SOME GREAT PHOTOS FOR EVERYONE TO SEE. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN FANTASTIC FOR BOTH THE KIDS AND THEIR CURIOUS PARENTS AT HOME...(THREE STARS FOR THE CLEANLINESS, FOR THE EXTRA BED AND THE MESS IN THE GIRLS ROOM...) BUT I GUESS THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS SOMETIMES..WE WILL BE BACK!"

"The camp was in general perfect, but it would be cool to have a wider variety of sandwiches for the meal in the beach, and I assume that there's no solution for the fact that we can't throw paper to the toilet, but if we could, it would be a great improvement for the camp."
