Surfing in Orkney and Shetland Islands

The Orkney and Shetland Islands are located on the northeast part of the North Shore of Scotland. This area is very exposed to many swells directions, with a window that spans from west to southeast. Most of the coast is composed of high cliffs but the parts that are flat have good points and reef breaks. As for the rest of the country the best time to surf is during autumn and winter but  the weather can get really cold so be prepared and pack a good wetsuit as well as booties, gloves and a hoodie.

The best surf spots in this area are Skail Bay, Marwick, Skara Brae and Birsay Bay.
