Tamarindo Surf Club is just like the tangy fruit after which the beach is named, Tamarindo is a delight for the senses. A former sleepy fishing village, quickly became the vacation hotspot that put Costa Rica on the map.
Nowadays, surfers, thrill seekers, nature lovers, partiers, and foodies all come together in this tropical paradise that is the epitome of “pura vida” culture.
As the premier destination in Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, Tamarindo has absolutely everything you could possibly imagine. Just 30 miles from the Liberia International Airport, you can literally fly right into it.
Beautiful beaches and biodiversity share the town with chic cafés, amazing restaurants, charming boutiques, and a thriving nightlife. As for daily activities, you won’t have time to do them all: surfing, water sports, fishing, horseback riding, scuba diving, and snorkeling are just a few of the options.
Eco-buffs should not miss the Tamarindo Wildlife Refuge, where you can take a canoe tour around this protected area of glorious forestation.

THE ACTIVITIES
Surf School
Tamarindo Beach is one of the main surf base in Costa Rica. The long beautiful beach at its center is great for learning how to surf and there are more intermediate & advanced breaks close by, the breaks in the area are some of the best in the world, as evidenced by the several international surfing competitions held here every year.
Surf Spots
The beautiful beaches are popular thanks to the consistency of the waves, and the town is a perfect jumping-off location for beach and point breaks along the coast. The calmest water for swimming can be found on the southern end of the beach while the water just off the busiest part of town is best for surfing.The nearby river mouth offers breaks that are perfect for the more experienced surfers. Surf is best during mid-high tide.
Nearby Spots
- Playa Grande
The wave, which breaks to the left and right, is very consistent and best surfed at mid to almost high tide. It is well known for its barrels This wave breaks good when the swell is small to medium. It can get big but closes out on big swells.
- Langosta
River mouth – breaks to the left and right over a reef and sand. This wave is best surfed at mid-tide.
Sapo – Left and right breaking wave, during low tide.
Capetown or Octavo – The waves break in front of the wooden post with an eight written on it.
- Avellana
Little Hawaii – This voluminous wave can hold big swells. The waves shapes nice during low tide, watch out for the shallow reef! This solid right is at the northern end of the beach.
El Palo (trunk) A great beach break with breaks to both sides. Surf this wave during high tide with a medium swell.
El Parque – Left and right breaking, wave is best surfed during high tide. Compared to El Palo the ocean is gentler at this place.
El Estero – It is the spot to surf when the swell is massive and the tide is low. With waves to both sides and barrels to the left this place can get crowded! The wave breaks over a rocky bottom.
- Playa Negra
This spot works at all tides, but it is very shallow at low tide. This is the time when the waves get tubular. The perfect right breaks over a reef and rocks. The take off is quite tricky and this is definitely not a place for beginners.
Major swells
April to October, but the clean surf season is December to April when swell from deep antic lows reach the Pacific coastline with offshore winds a common occurrence. Typically morning surfs are offshore and afternoon is light onshore, make sure you are up early to get those classic glassy sessions.

LOCATION & GETTING HERE
Location
Tamarindo Surf Club & Hostel is located 50mtrs far from the beach. Just a few minutes walking to the town center and close the groceries, ATMs, hospitals, bars & restaurants.
No vaccine is required to enter Costa Rica. Nevertheless, think about taking a treatment against malaria if you wish to hazard in the jungle. The local currency is Colon (CRC) but it is not exportable. We recommend you to have US dollars in small denominations and change on the way there. Credit cards are not accepted everywhere.
Getting Here
Nearby airports to Tamarindo: San José (5hrs) and Liberia (1,5hrs).
From the airport
Liberia Airport is about 1.5 hours away from Tamarindo. Take a shuttle or a private transfer.
From the Tamarindo airport, you can hop into a taxi (Uber isn’t available in the area).
By bus
From the 7/10 bus terminal in San Jose, ask for the direct bus to Tamarindo run by the Alfaro bus company.
This bus leaves at 11:30AM and 3:30PM every day. When the bus arrives to Tamarindo, the bus driver will announce the last stop – this is where you should get off. Walk straight for about 100 meters, take the first left, and continue straight for about 2 minutes.
