THE ACTIVITIES

From young to old, from beginner to expert, the waves of Mentawai are for everyone. And we really mean it. Mentawai has more than 30 world-class waves spread between 3 main islands: Siberut (North), Sipura (Central) and Pagai-Utara & Pagai-Selatan (South). The months of March and November are less consistent in terms of amounts of swell but still produce world class surf, usually generated from longer period South swells which are perfect for some of the most iconic waves of Mentawai. In March and November winds are likely to be lighter and crowds are at a minimum. From December to February is the summer season in Mentawai, which normally means less intense storm activity and swells traveling from further away. Glassy perfect surf in the 2-4 ft range is still enjoyed daily with the occasional larger swell. This is a great time of year for beginners surfers and those who are looking to get plenty of wave time at these world class breaks.  From April to October is regarded as the most consistent time to score a larger swell in the Mentawai Islands. This is when the Indian Ocean is producing intense storms, therefore increasing wave action and intensity.

A normal day at the camp starts with a cup off coffee before the sunrise, followed by a morning surf session. After that, big breakfast, little rest time in the external areas and another surf followed by a big beatifull lunch plate. For the first ours of the afternoon some people take a nap, some go explore the surroundings (islands), some play videogames, some surf more. At the end of the day, after dinner, we usually get together and see the surf footage of the day. The surf guides always present helpful tips on those “meetings”. Surf guide also surf together every session, explains the surf-break of the day and encourages you to push your limits.

LOCATION & GETTING HERE

Location

Our  location is where we want to be.

Getting Here

The Mentawai Islands are approximately 150km off the coast of West Sumatra, Indonesia, and to get there you have to cross the Mentawai Strait from the city of Padang (starting point of our trip/crossing). So first you need to get to Padang (PDG Airport).

Your international flight should arrive at one of these airports in order to get to Padang:

  1. Kuala Lumpur (KUL)
  2. Jakarta (CGK or JKT)
  3. Singapore (SIN)
  4. Bali (DPS)

Daily flights from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) or Jakarta (JKT) serve as your best option of arrival. All domestic airlines accept surfboards and we recommend Garuda Indonesia based upon surfboard bag tolerance and punctuality. Other Airline options are Air Asia (from KUL and SIN) and Lion Air (from JKT or BALI). Surfboard bags are subject to a sports equipment fee, which can be either pre-booked at a discounted rate online or at a standard rate (much more expensive) at the airport check-in counters.

From Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Direct 1h10min flight with Air Asia.

From Jakarta (CGK or JKT) Direct 1h45min Flight with Garuda, Citilink or Lion Air (is often delayed).

From Singapore (SIN) – Option 1. Fly via Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia, Garuda or Lion Air – Around 6h total time with layover; Option 2. By 45 min ferry ride to Batam (BTH), then a 45 min flight to PDG with Garuda, Citilink or Lion Air (is often delayed) – Around 5h total time with ride from ferry to airport.

From Bali (DPS) – Flight via Jakarta with, Garuda, Citilink or Lion Air – Around 6h total time with layover.

Our crew will welcome you at the airport (PDG) and from that point on you won´t need to worry with anything else.
