SURF SPOTS IN WEST SUMBAWA

In front of the resort we have “Tropicals left” or “Tropis”. A good wave for beginners and intermediate surfers in Sumbawa. But don’t worry.. Also a great fun wave for experienced surfers. Its long rippable left hand point break which bowls into the inside reef. There is also a right hand point on the other side of the channel. Fast at the takeoff and then breaks slowly into deep water channel, great wave for beginner surfers in West Sumbawa

SURFING in West Sumbawa

Yoyos or other local waves like Super Suck, Big Brother, Scar Reef, Little Bingin, Donuts, and a few other secret spots.

YOYOS: 10 min by car. Swell magnet which consists of The Wedge and The Hook. Fun “down the line” right handers which offer both rippable rides aswell as barrels.

SUPER SUCK: 15 min by car. Needs big swell. Shallow and fast but on its day it can grant you the longest barrel of your life.

SCAR REEF: 1 hour by car. Breaks best with swells over six foot. This long powerful wave with fast take off and adrenalin from start to finish.

LITTLE BINGIN: Fun wave right next to Scar Reef, breaks left and right.

WHICH SEASON SHOULD I GO TO WEST SUMBAWA FOR SURFING?

The surf in West Sumbawa is great all year round! The months from June to August get the biggest swells and are perfect for SuperSuck and Scar Reef blowing offshore winds all day long so that is where we surf most days. But the morning and afternoons can still be fun out the front of our resort.

The in-between seasons of September-November and March-May can be the best! Surf in the morning at our front-yard Tropical left and right, with glassy conditions every morning and then go to Yoyos, Supers or Scars for a second surf.

Although Christmas, Jan and Feb are the best for the wave out the front and no wind and barely any surfers!

This truly exotic accommodation is located on a secluded beach on the South West corner of Sumbawa near to Maluk -Sekonkang, about 3 hours away from Sumbawa Besar. Only minutes away from Yo-Yo’s, Scar Reef, Super Suck and other world renowned surfing spots.

At the Surf Resort in Sumbawa there is also huge plantations of Dragon Fruit, Aloe Vera, and Banana. There is monkeys, wild horses and other wild life that can be seen while driving around the area.

You have this amazing up stairs section with great views, but because the tiles aren't mopped to remove the sea dew you can't walk on it because it is so slippery. "Nomad Tropical Surf Resort was a fantastic place to stay for a group of friends getting away on a surfing holiday. The location was great, having a fun wave to surf directly out the front and other more challenging waves only a short drive a way. All of the staff were very friendly & helpful. The rooms were very comfortable & clean. The food in the restaurant was amazing, no one left hungry. The only confusion was around juices not being include in our pre paid package. On the menu it says that Juices are unlimited, but at the end of the trip we were charged for them (and we drank a lot of them because they were soooo good). Minor issue & I am sure it will be easy to fix the wording on the menu. All in all a fantastic holiday & cant wait to go back to Nomad Tropical Resort."

"Well my wife and I have just spent a week at Nomad Tropical Resort West Sumbawa and we can not praise it enough. I went for the surfing and relaxing and my wife for the relaxing. As a surf location it has about everything I could ask for with an easy short paddle through the break in the reef to a nice reliable left hander. A short drive over the hill is also Yo yo's and Super Sucks which offer bigger barrel type waves and the resort is only too happy to drive you there. A further drive and you get to Scar Reef. The resort itself is beautiful and is lovely and clean. There is a great big swimming pool and lots of different areas for sunbathing or sitting in the shade either around the pool area or watching the ocean and surf with a Bintang or two. The meals are absolutely fantastic and more than we could eat with a great selection of European and local dishes beautifully presented. Mike the manager and Andrew the surf guide / project manager certainly made us feel right at home and by the time we left we felt like old friends. The one aspect that made the whole experience unforgettable were the staff, they are the best group of people that you could ask for to care for your needs. Nothing was too much trouble and they always had those great big beautiful smiles, they even helped me learn a bit if Basa Indonesia, and by the time we left we felt like we were part of a big happy family. Our only regret is that we only stayed for one week but we will be going back and for two weeks. This resort is a fantastic holiday destination for surfers and non surfers alike and is ideal for families as well, massages, snorkelling gear, fishing gear and boat rides all available."

"we had a fantastic stay at Nomads. The staff were great as was the food and the surf guide Andrew. It would have been nice to have some soft music when having a massage. We helped to clean up the beach in front of the Resort and that really should be done each morning to highlight the pristine environment. There didn't seem to be any pool towels. It would be a good idea to put the blow up pool toys away each evening so they don't look and feel so perished. It would have been lovely to do yoga in the morning or evening something for wives & kids. Other things for wives & kids cooking classes, pool volleyball or water polo goals, movie nights. Despite my suggestions had a wonderful stay with great people and areal escape from the busy life anywhere other than Sumbawa. Thank you again Sue & John Magarey"

"We were pleased with hidden location in Sumbawa Island, with beautiful view and very nice Tropical rigrt and left waves in front of hotel area. There was great service, delicious food and hand made snacks. Every evening we enjoyed with spectacular sunsets. So, it was really outstanding surf holiday experience. We had some questions about prepaid surf guiding (that means car with driver to surf outside camp) we prepaid this service, but didn't usr it because conditions were exelent in front of the hotel, but management was very friendly and we settled this question very fast, big thanks to Nomad Surfers family. "It's pretty hard to believe that resort exists in West Sumbawa. If you want to surf good waves and you like to be comfortable don't blow it and stay anywhere else. The food and resort is second to none. And with such a consistent wave out front of the resort you're able to do a surf check practically from your bed. There's also so many waves in the area it's an amazing place to be. The guides work so hard as well to put you in good waves and keep you comfortable. Even though it can take some time to get there, Nomad's system is the best. "Great holiday with outstanding waves. Tropicals is a beautiful and quiet resort where the staff are all very friendly. The surf guides could not be more helpful and the great party atmosphere was perfect for my 12 yr old son and I. We had some big swells for the first few days and when it got smaller, Tropicals was breaking with a near perfect tubular wave. Remember, you are in Sambawa and not a first world environment. My suggestion is to take things as they come and keep a smile on your face. We had some troubles getting back to Lombok due to a boat break down but Mike the manager made sure we got back to Bali safely. The business class upgrade made it so much nicer. We will definitely be back and look forward to catching some more tubes. I would highly recommend a father/son trip as the waves at Super Suck and Tropicals are great for kids. (As long as they can manage 4 to 6 foot waves) Thanks again to the team at Tropicals."

The laid back & relaxing atmosphere at the Resort was just what’s required for a holiday. The all inclusive package for accommodation, meals, resort facilities & surf guides was excellent. Unlike some other places you may stay where you feel you are always reaching for your wallet. The Tropical team were excellent hosts to the entire family from Danny White’s three year old daughter, to the elders of the group, Danny, Janelle, Tracey & I, in our forties. I would also like to highlight the top job completed by our main hosts Guy & Indra. Their interaction with everyone and willingness to tailor the Sumbawa experience to meet individuals needs was first class. To maintain the resorts personal and relaxing feeling, which will attract repeat customers, I recommend that the Tropicals surf break continue to maintain a low profile. If it were to get more crowded like Yo Yos & Super Suck the experience would not be so special. For example, a real highlight was surfing with my three sons & good friends at Tropicals without excessive crowds souring the experience. I wanted to drop you an email and thank you for providing my wife and I with such beautiful, friendly, happy experience at your resort. We often stay at the Novatel in Lombok and had always loved it however after experiencing the Nomad Tropical resort we are unlikely to return to the Novatel as we have now found better! Just wanted to mention a couple of outstanding experiences at the resort; The Chefs, we did not meet them but the food was exquisite! We had ample and it was always great, we loved the simplicity of the set menus. The ever friendly, kind, patient, nothing was too difficult, Bar Staff, especially, Lina, Diana and Eka. Ali in the Gym for his help with my sore back. Adi for his surfing humour and driving us around. The cleaners who kept our room beautifully. Especially a huge thanks to Anthony for always checking to see if I could fit in one more surf, somewhere, providing fantastic information on surf locations and conditions, good humour and making us go on the "Hash Run" which was eye opening. "Nomad Tropical Resort was beautiful! Remotely situated in Sumbawa, right on the beach with a great lefthander reef right out the front with ripable sections all the way to the channel. Classy accomodation, all meals catered for and plenty of bintangs to be had! Other activities included snokeling and speer fishing on the reef out the front, pool and bar setup, climbing the giant mountain beside the resort or just chillin’ watching the waves under the bungalows! Loved it here! No crowds and great place to surf and relax, friendly staff looking after their guests! It was a hard place to leave! I will be going back for sure!"
