Red Island Beach Surf Camp - Alas Purwo National Park, Java. Indonesia

INTRODUCTION

Our trip starts in Canggu where we go head to Red Island in our surf camp van + ferry. Our Surf Camp is located at Red Island on the off-the-beaten-track Island of Java, where you will spend 6 nights.

Red Island provides perfect conditions from gentle beginner swells to epic barrels for advanced riders. Guests enjoy comfortable beachfront stays, daily surf sessions, and downtime by the infinity pool or in hammocks under palm trees. It’s an uncrowded paradise blending world-class surfing with Indonesia’s natural beauty.

Stay in cozy dorms or private Indonesian-style bungalows just steps from the beach, complete with amenities, fans, air-con, and Wi-Fi in common areas. After a day of riding the waves, unwind in a hammock under a palm tree with a cold beer or take a dip in the infinity pool overlooking one of the world’s most unspoiled beaches.

Surfing is the highlight, with lessons on gentle waves for beginners and longboarders, plus barrels and shore breaks for experienced surfers—all uncrowded due to the remote location. Free afternoon practice sessions use camp boards, followed by pool dips, beach chilling, or optional massages. Excursions can include G-Land surf trips, Ijen Volcano hikes for blue lava sunrises, village tours, turtle sanctuaries, or nearby beaches like Pantai Mustica.

The camp features cozy shared dorms and private Indonesian-style bungalows steps from the beach, equipped with fans, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi in common areas.

Perfect place to learn to surf

"I stayed in the camp for three weeks (in a dorm room) and found it to be one of the top highlights of my travels. Friendly and approachable staff Empty ocean with good surfing conditions for a peaceful surf Great instructor to student ratio Good food (with variety) Great amenities (Pool, Chromecast, Board games, hammocks) Rooms are slightly basic but it is in an isolated area and they do still have everything you will need (comfy beds, air conditioning/fans etc.) Hope to be back soon!"

Surf Vacation

"Red Island is beautiful, a really pretty place that lets you experience local life if you want but with the safe haven of camp which has all the western options you want if you need them. Good food, great location, good waves and really nice staff. The beach is a 20 second walk from the camp so you can just surf whenever you like, if you want to chill out and hide away there are secluded hammoks and loads of books to get into and if you fancy a little social time the kitchen area with a pool table and swimming pool right next to is the place to hang out. There are some weights if you fancy gym time and yoga lessons if you are into that sort of thing. I stayed in the dorms which were clean and comfortable, every tuesday the guys chuck a beach party for the backpckers that visit in a group each week from g adventures and mojo surf which is great for letting your hair down every once in a while. Red island is pretty close (in indo measures) to g land which I drove then boated to. Also you have black sands beach a short trip away which is so nice and some other cool little spots to check out like the volcano two hours north of red island. You just have to explore, talk to the guys that live there and go for it. All the staff are knowledgable with great to workable english and they will tell you all you need to know about the surrounds so you can get your adventure. Overall id definitely reccomend Red Island as a spot to check into on your surf adventure, perfect mix of surf, sun and sand. The food is a winner and your tan will definitely get a boost"

Dreamy

"My partner and I stayed at the Red Island Surf Camp for 5 days, which was definitely not enough. I could stay there forever. We went there with some other young beginner and intermediate surfers, and everything was just perfect. We slept in a nice private room called a "Bungalow", where we had a dreamy bed and a cool outside bathroom. The staff who are both locals and people from around the world, were very nice and helpfull. The local kitchen ladies made delicious food 3 times a day, and not a single time was I disappointed. The cool swedish camp manager, Rick, and both the yoga and surf instructors were always ready to tell interesting stories and participate in the daily events wether it was surfing all day, playing cards in the evening or just relaxing next to the pool. The surfing lessons as well were on point. Our three instructors were all talented and english speaking and their all time big smiles were just another plus. The atmosphere in this camp is so joyful and dreamy. It is filled with hammocks, tree cabins, beautiful garden areas and is placed right next to the beach. I had the most wonderful time there hanging out and getting close with all the other guests. And another thing you wouldn't miss out on, are the most beautiful sunsets at the beach."
