CULTURAL TOURS
Siberut Island has a unique nature including one of the most preserved primitive tribe in the world. Our co-owner and founder Delvino Sabolak has been operating his own travel agency for more than 10 years. Born and bred in Mentawai Islands, his local knowledge and relationships with local tribes will take you to the best places.
We can organize trekking and hiking adventures for cultural sharing and family fun. Learn how to perform the traditional dance (animals, war dance and gratitude to nature) and traditional ceremonies. Mentawai is one of the best place to conduct an Ethnographic study since it’s one of the oldest tribe in Indonesia.
Mentawai Island tattoo is the oldest in the world using materials from the nature.
Some other activities might include “Process the sago” (Mentawaian daily food), staple food made from the sawdust of the tree, make bow and arrows and poison for it, If any ritual or something to celebrate they go hunting.
The women usually go fishing in the river. Children will also be able to participate in those activities (fishing, hunting practice, roof making, etc.). Mentawaian traditional dance have many different styles mostly inspired by the animals (monkey, birds, snakes…)
For your trip, our Mentawaian Guide will ask what sort of dance style you would like to enjoy so the head of clan can suggest who should perform of the dance. You can also request what other traditional activities you would like to see.
This new source of income, supported by traditional living will promote cultural preservation.
** Please note these are not single day trips and would be required to be booked prior to arrival at an additional cost
ACTIVITIES
SURFING
There’s over a dozen surf breaks around the lodge including world-class waves for all surfing levels.
We also have some secret spots…trust our surf guide to help you score when the conditions are right.
A typical day at The Lodge may include:
Breakfast served from 7am at the Nyang Nyang Hut.
For early birds that want to score a first sunrise surf out the front there will be tea, coffee, nuts and fruits available. Depending on the swell and wind conditions, we’ll jump aboard our boats and look for the best waves around after breakfast.
If we decide to leave for a full day trip we will pack lunch, snacks and fresh beverages to eat on board or a beach, otherwise we will come back for lunch at the hut. Use of boats available for afternoon sessions upon request*. Back at the surf lodge, take a shower, enjoy a meal, chill and rest up for the next day of surfing and adventure.
FISHING
Our priority is to get you on the best waves around but we also know that fishing and spear fishing can be great activities, due to the nature of the reefs and underwater wildlife. We will have fishing equipment available including spear guns, snorkels, fins etc for our guests but we strongly encourage fishing enthusiasts to bring their own fishing gear.
Thanks to Robinson our local fishing expert, you’ll be able to discover some amazing fishing areas near reefs and in deep Ocean, where large pelagic such as Wahoo, Mackerels, Giant Trevally, King fish, King Barracudas, Dogtooth Tuna and others can be found.
SNORKELING
Underwater life is extremely rich in this area and offers an incredible diversity, in a warm crystal clear water. This is a spectacular experience to encounter local species such as turtles and all the colorful reef fishes in their natural environment.
You can either go snorkeling on the beach in front of the lodge or book a boat trip with our staff to take you to other spots around the island. Next time you’ll be surfing a wave, you’ll have this in mind and we can assure you’ll feel a deep connection and a great harmony with the wildlife below your feet!
SURFING
SINCE THE MID 90’S, THE MENTAWAII ISLANDS HAVE BEEN REGARDED AS ONE OF THE MOST WAVE RICH DESTINATIONS ON THE PLANET. NOWHERE ELSE ON EARTH RECEIVES MORE CONSISTENT SWELL WITH GENERALLY LIGHT WINDS TURNING PERFECT SWELL INTO WORLD-CLASS WARM WAVES.
Our beachfront bungalow is nestled among the shades of palm trees and located a stones throw away from the pristine waters edge. Comprising of two main rooms the free standing traditional Mentawai thatched uma has been handcrafted by local Mentawaiian craftsmen. The pairing of a traditional uma with Western comforts and amenities includes fresh bedding provided every few days, air conditioning and a shared private bathroom facility.
The most consistent seasons are generally between March and November when the Indian Ocean is turning into a groundswell-producing machine. Whatever month you go and whatever the wind, swell and tide conditions happen to be, somewhere in the Mentawai will nearly always be working.
Waves vary in size from 2 to 12 foot with the average day being 3-5 ft. They can range anywhere from fun sized walls to awesome stand-up barrels, there are set-ups for everyone. Clean, head high waves going off under offshore winds are virtually guaranteed even if there is no obvious groundswell running. Whether you’re natural or goofy, advanced beginner or the most experienced charger, this place has the right wave for you.
LOCATION & GETTING HERE
Location
There are not many places in the world where you could find all packed into one small island some excellent world class surfing spots, exotic tropical forests, local tribal experiences, and rare exotic plant and animal species.
Located off the West coast of Sumatra, the Mentawai archipelago includes four municipalities: Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai and South Pagai. Even if the physical distance between the mainland and Mentawai is not great (150 km) this remains one of the most isolated places in Indonesia.
A long way from the world of shopping malls and theme parks, this is where travelers come from all around the world to get an authentic off-the-beaten-track adventure trip. From the moment you arrive you are greeted by white sandy beaches line with palm trees and hillsides of ancient rainforests.
Siberut Island recently received international attention as a priority conservation area, and has earned its designation as a UNESCO biosphere reserve for the unique culture of the ethnic Mentawaian and endemic of its biodiversity.
The archipelago is thought to have broken off from the rest of Sumara about 500,000 years ago and it is only since the 20th century that outside influences began to have an impact on the local people. Today, the Mentawai still abide by traditional practices and live largely off the land.
Local people have a strong spiritual relationship with the forest with a belief system that emphasizes harmony with creation. It is believed people first came to inhabit these islands at least several thousand years ago. Most anthropologists classify the Mentawai people as Protomalay.
The biggest town on Siberut is Muara Siberut on the southeast coast. This is the major point of entry for many of our travelers, other surfers and trekkers in search of an adventure.
CLIMATE AND TOPOGRAPHY
Siberut Island and Northern Mentawai are characterized by a wet equatorial climate, warm and humid, perfect synomous of a great surf trip! Temperatures generally range from 35°C (70-90°F), and humidity averages 81-85%.
The dry season (influenced by the Australian continental air masses) is from February to September and the rainy season (caused by Asia and Pacific Ocean air masses) is from October to January, but all months have an average precipitation value of at least 60 mm.
In other terms, dry season does not mean that there are no rains. In fact tropical showers in a dry season’s afternoon is a regular affair, and wet season can also be dry and sunny for weeks at a time. It is typically hot and wet throughout the year and rainfall is frequent. One day in an equatorial climate can be very similar to the next.
Local winds are moderate and generally predictable, variable throughout most of the year but occasionally go through intermittent periods of storminess, called “Badai’s”.
Thanks to its position 2° below the Equator, The Mentawai Surf Lodge is not influenced by the steady easterly trade winds often associated with the rest of Indonesia. The water temperature is a consistent warm 27°C all year round so boardshorts are all you’ll need, you will never wear a wet suit but it might be worth bringing rash-vests, surf t-shirts and hats to protect your skin from the strong sun.
