The best time for the Northern Atolls is from April to October, with the most reliable swells from June to September, when long-period south swells from the southern Indian Ocean light up the reef passes. During this southwest monsoon period, many of the main breaks can have favorable winds, offering long, rippable walls and occasionally powerful barrels in the 4–8 ft range, with bigger days on stronger pulses.

Central Atolls

The Central Atolls (such as Meemu, Thaa, and Laamu) are a great option for those looking for a balance between quality waves and fewer crowds. You still benefit from the same swell window as the Northern Atolls, but with fewer boats and less concentrated surf tourism, which often means more relaxed sessions and a better chance of sharing the lineup with just your group.

Here, surfers can expect a mix of playful reef breaks and more powerful walls, with several rights and lefts that work on different tides and wind directions. The prime season is also from April to October, with June to September delivering the most consistent surf; shoulder months like April–May and October can offer glassier conditions and fewer surfers, ideal for intermediate and advanced riders who value variety and space.

Southern Atolls

Huvadhoo (also known as Southern Atolls) are located in the most southern section of the Maldives, fewer surf boats and surf charters operate in this area, therefore even the most popular spots in this region are usually less crowded than the Northern Atolls. The Southern Atolls are still the most secluded and idyllic, preserving the beauty of a remote island paradise that comes complete with incredible waves.

The Atoll is said to have the best conditions in March and April just before the southwest monsoon begins and September to November when it is coming to a close. From May to August there can be wind issues on the south-facing spots but that’s when you motor to the east-facing part of the atoll where there is more protection. The east-facing breaks will still have plenty of sizes as this is the peak swell time.

Male Airport (MLE) is an island just dedicated to the airport.
