Northland New Zealand Surfing

Northland New Zealand Surfing or the ‘winterless north’ is renowned for its beautiful, empty white sand beaches, crystal clear water and New Zealand’s warmest climate. Northland has one of New Zealand’s best and largest left hand point breaks; Shipwreck Bay or ‘Shippies’ as many call it.

Shippies consists of several rock bottom reef breaks stretching over two kilometres. There are many more hollow beach breaks in the Northland region producing classic A frame peaks. These waves are more isolated and unknown to the average surfer. To find out how to score perfect waves in Northland New Zealand, you’ll have to come along for the ride.

  • 43Spots
  • 280° Swell Window
  • 14 – 23°C Water Temp
  • 310km from Auckland

South Island New Zealand Surfing

The South Island New Zealand surfing population is small but it’s huge diversity of breaks means you are bound to surf with just you and your mates. With a swell window of almost 270 degrees there’s always a wave that’s firing on the South Island with something for everyone. Hollow beach breaks, long mellow sand points and isolated river mouths. Many are off the beaten track, which is where the intimate knowledge of our guides ensures you get the most out of your trip. If you’re game to adventure even further afield, there is the Catlins, a real adventurer’s paradise!

  • 150 Spots
  • 270° Swell Window
  • 6 – 16°C Water Temp
  • 15000km from Auckland

Marlborough New Zealand Surfing

Marlborough has numerous rocky peninsulas where the southern mountains meet the Pacific Ocean. In these waters, a complex marine ecosystem provides an ideal place for getting ‘up close with nature’. Marlborough’s epic right hand point breaks and river mouths are intensified by deep ocean trenches and tidal upwellings. These waves are scattered along the coast and again access is an issue. Knowledge of tides and river levels is key to scoring these dynamic surf breaks. The experienced Marlborough New Zealand surfing guides will make sure that you are surfing the right place at the right time.

  • 45 Spots
  • 90° Swell Window
  • 10 – 18°C Water Temp
  • 950km from Auckland

East Coast New Zealand Surfing

While not as famous as the long left hand point breaks of Raglan, East Coast New Zealand Surfing’s reputation for its consistence, copping the full brunt of southerly, easterly and northerly swells make it a top destination. Due to its remote location and relaxed atmosphere there is the opportunity to score pumping uncrowded waves with just your own crew.

Gisborne is home to high quality, powerful, hollow barrelling beach breaks, comparable to France and Mexico. Gisborne is a great launching point for exploring. It is the gateway to both the isolated East Cape and the fabled Mahia Peninsula. These areas are extremely remote and a wrong turn could result in a fruitless drive on long winding dirt roads and possibly meeting unwelcoming landowners. A local New Zealand surf guide is essential to access these world class reefs, river mouths and points.

  • 90 Spots
  • 320° Swell Window
  • 14 – 21°C Water Temp
  • 480km From Auckland

Auckland New Zealand Surfing

New Zealand Surfing Adventures are based at Piha Beach, one of Auckland New Zealand Surfing’s best beaches. South Piha has a quality left hand bar break which can be very hollow and has long workable walls. North Piha’s river mouth can produce quality sandbanks with long rippable walls and inside barrel sections, while caves at the far north of the beach offer tubing peaks. If you are in Auckland, New Zealand for a short time and wish to maximise your chances of surfing then you should make a trip to Piha Beach. It’s a beautiful rugged coastline that offers consistent quality and often very hollow beach breaks. Piha’s black sand beach is set amongst rugged cliffs and dense bush valleys resulting in an inspiring and magical backdrop in which to surf. Located 45 minutes from central Auckland we offer our own accommodation at Piha Beach, where you can walk down to enjoy the waves.

  • 90° Swell Window
  • 14 – 22°C Water Temp
  • 45km from Auckland

Raglan New Zealand Surfing

The West Coast of the North Island, including the Taranaki coast south of Raglan boasts over 50 world class reef and point breaks. However, many of the waves around this area are located on private farmland, making it essential to have a surf guide to gain access and navigate through the maze of paddocks and back roads. Raglan New Zealand Surfing breaks on the North Island are New Zealand surfing’s most famous surfing spots. Consisting of three left hand points, peeling mechanically over volcanic reefs and boulders for hundreds of metres. Raglan is consistently surfable in a variety of conditions. The three different points mean a range of options for all levels of surfing ability.

LOCATION & GETTING HERE

Location

New Zealand is comprised of two islands: the North and the South.

The North Island, or Te Ika-a-Māui, is more heavily populated and travelled than the South Island due to its sub-tropical weather, world-renown reefs and impressive waves. Piha Surfcamp and Tours’ main lodging and accommodation packages are located on Surf Highway 45 in Taranaki.

The north of New Zealand is popular due to urban cities like Auckland and beautiful coastal features like Seven Mile Beach, Bay of Plenty, Hauraki Gulf, and Hawk Bay. Peninsulas, National Parks, and active volcanoes round out the must-see sites for visitors on this Pacific coast holiday.

The South Island, or Te Waipounamu, is known for it’s diverse landscapes of mountain greenery and glaciers. Known as the “mainland,” the South Island draws tourists who are looking for a little bit of everything; from hiking, skiing and snowboarding, to beautiful marine and bird life, here visitors can experience the “adventure capital“, otherwise known as Queenstown. Also prominent are the picturesque Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound where visitors can experience the rigid mountain peeks and tangled rainforest sites.

The climate of New Zealand’s South Island becomes quite cold during its winter months, known to reach -10 C as the Alps provide great skiing options. However, much of the North coast sees little rainfall, mild temperatures, and a lot of sunshine.

Getting Here

Private airport transfers will pick you up at Auckland International Airport or other arranged location in the Auckland region. Each group will be given their own private transfer for your accommodations. Once arriving, your adventure awaits you; you’ll set out with your group and tour guide to experience your Piha Surfcamp and Tours.

Whenever your beach is not within walking distance, your guides will get your there via 4-wheel drive transport that can reach even the most remote of locations. Whether it’s a trip to a nearby beach, or traveling from the North to the South island, your tour guide will handle your transportation needs. This will allow you to enjoy the sites, the sounds, and the surf that New Zealand has to offer.

At the end of your trip, you will be driven back to Auckland International Airport. If you are part of the “Searcher” package that travels both the north and south islands, your journey will end in Dunedin where you will be flown back to Auckland for your flight home.

Auckland International Airport is located approximately 4,5 kilometers (2,8 miles) south of Mangere and about 8,0 kilometers (5,0 miles) west of Manukau City. Auckland International Airport IATA code is AKL.
