LOCATION & GETTING HERE
Location
The Mentawai Islands lie roughly 100 km off of the west coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. They consist of 4 main islands with many smaller islands scattered throughout. From north to south, the main islands are Siberut, Sipora, North Pagi, and South Pagi.
These islands block most swells from reaching the mainland on Sumatra, but they offer some of the most perfect surf in the world. Access to the islands is by sea only with regular ferries to the main trading ports, but by far the best way to access the surf is by charter boat.
Getting Here
To fly into Padang you must route through either Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore etc. If you are doing customs in Jakarta or Bali first, your automatic 30 day non-extendable “visa on arrival” may be free but be ready to pay USD $35 regardless for it as that’s what it costs in most entry ports. Just contact us and we’ll hook you up with the right people to help you get here and upon landing in Padang everything else is completely taken care of for you.

FAQ
Who will I be surfing with?
Our boat holds up to 10 guests. While it is inevitable we will encounter other surfers in the area, we will strive to put you in the right place at the right time and yes… we have the experience and speed to allow you to score. Also.. even though you may be surfing with just your own group, know that people tend to paddle out in “shifts” …. ensuring there are plenty of waves for all.
Due to medical or personal reasons, I follow a special diet. Can you accommodate this?
Yes, let us know and we will accommodate your diet and health requirements.
Can I make phone calls while I am on the boat?
There is a satellite phone on board. Incoming calls are not charged however you will have to pay if you wish to make an outgoing call. There is cell phone coverage in certain areas of the Mentawais but you will have to set up international calling on your phone usually before you leave or allow time to acquire a local SIM card to use while you are sailing.
Do you have photography equipment on board?
Yes, our crew on board can take photos with our Canon digital camera with 400 lenses then burn the shots on CD or memory stick for US $150pp. Bring extra cash if you want this service.
Can I recharge my video camera, laptop, Ipod etc. on the boat?
Yes – we have 220v DC connected to our generators. Most computers, iPads etc. can run and charge on this but check the specs on all your equipment beforehand. Also, most sockets are 2-prong so bring any 3-prong to 2-prong adapters you might need.
How many boards should I bring?
The airlines are crazy money hungry for board fees these days. Most surfers bring 2-4 boards. Usually your daily go-to board plus a step-up. Bring a replacement for your most used board if you are bringing an extra as boards can break. Don’t forget extra leashes and tropical wax!
Do I need a Visa for Indonesia?
As of March 2004, nationals of United States, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Finland, Hungary, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Norway, France, Poland, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Taiwan must pay $25USD for entry visa on arrival in Indonesia. When you first land in Indonesia and BEFORE you reach the customs desk you will need to stop at the foreign arrivals visa kiosk to purchase your $25USD 30 day instant visa. If you are staying longer than 30 days you will need to arrange a longer visa before arriving or leave the country and re-enter again. Also, you should have at least 6 months before expiration remaining on your passport and your visa needs to adhere to at least one whole open page in your passport.
How do I make a payment?
Once you have submitted your intended travel dates we will reply to you with our banking details so you can make payments. Once any monies have been paid please confirm to us via email and we will acknowledge once payment has been received.
What do you suggest I pack?
Excess baggage fees are an issue these days but the below items should be a go
- 2 or 3 pairs of board shorts
- A few t-shirts
