This exclusive one week camp offers a British boarding experience in the heart of Asia surrounded by stunning facilities in one of the world’s leading cities. In addition to our dynamic curriculum, the course combines traditional elements of top British boarding schools with other aspects of Hong Kong life such as business and innovation. It is the first and only residential course of its kind in Hong Kong. Our course has already received a great deal of interest, so places are going to fill up quickly!

The International School in Hong Kong is a part of the Harrow Family and it has its roots in London. Harrow has been one of the greatest names in English education ever since Queen Elizabeth I founded the school in 1572, and it has a remarkable history and heritage. The Education is proud to be hosting camps on such an impressive site; its British counterpart has produced world leaders including Winston Churchill and the first Prime Minister of India. The School is the first international boarding and day school in Hong Kong, and with the school only four years old, the new campus boasts first-rate, purpose-built facilities whilst embracing its location in Hong Kong.

Students at The Camp will be able to enjoy the full range of these wonderful facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, a 4G AstroTurf pitch, finest quality modern classroom spaces, and brand new boarding houses. As with all of our courses, pastoral care and academic excellence are at the centre of everything we do. The site at Harrow International School Hong Kong is especially designed to cater for boarding so is the perfect location for a residential language course. Our 1:5 staff:student ratio ensures that all students will be fully cared for whilst being able to fully discover their passions in our caring environment.

The Education combines a strong emphasis on sports, challenging collaborative activities, and engaging course life with an inspiring curriculum designed to foster proficiency in English language, confidence in public speaking, and independent thought. This unique course will be an experience to last a lifetime for anyone who is looking to improve their English and experience life away from home for a fun-filled week.

THE ACCOMMODATION

Rooms

In the Prep School Houses, there is a mixture of study bedrooms for 2, 3 and 4 students; in the Senior School Houses, they include single rooms, usually with a shared bathroom, as well as for 2 or 3 students.

Each House has a common room with a variety of facilities in which its residents can relax and socialize. In addition, all boarders share a common room on the ground floor together with an outside patio area in front of the boarding block.

Facilities

  • Multi-purpose athletics centre
  • Large air-conditioned Sports Hall
  • Gymnastics Hall
  • Extensive floodlit rugby
  • Cricket and football pitches with natural grass surfaces
  • Swimming pool
  • Fitness suite
  • Climbing (bouldering) wall
  • Six floodlit tennis courts
  • Rugby floodlit field
  • Cricket floodlit field
  • Football floodlit fields
  • Lake, used for a variety of water sports and activities.
  • There are currently three boys’ and three girls’ Prep School Houses (Years 6 to 8), and four boys’ and three girls’ Senior Houses (Years 9 to 13).

Security

Resident in each House is a House Master or House Mistress, a Resident House Tutor and, in Prep Houses, a Gap Tutor. However, Upper School visiting tutors (all Upper School teachers are members of a House pastoral team and have responsibility for a group of tutees in their House), together with two resident matrons and a day matron, are also very much involved in the supervision and monitoring of activities in the Houses in the evenings and at weekends.

Boarding School

The personal and organisational skills of boarders develop strongly from the close interaction between students from many different backgrounds living together and managing their daily lives. The school day at is a long one with academic lessons and extra-curricular activities integrated into the timetable, but students learn to take responsibility for meeting their commitments throughout the day.

Meals

However, living onsite means there is also time to build relationships formally and informally within the Houses and the School. Students take breakfast, lunch and supper with their House groups in the Dining Hall, where emphasis is laid on manners and the art of proper conversation.

Medical Centre

The boarding facility also contains a medical centre where 24-hour medical care is available. Fully qualified members of nursing staff are on duty throughout the day and night.

THE ACTIVITIES

The Camp

The opportunities for enrichment in sports, music, art, drama, other cultural and academic extension activities in enrichment time before and after the formal School day are extensive – and the time usually spent on travel time to and from school, especially in Hong Kong, can be utilized more fruitfully. Boarders do their Prep (homework) in their study bedrooms in the evenings in their Houses, but benefit from the supervision of the House staff and interaction with other students.

This timetable is an example of how the course runs. The trip days sometimes move from Wednesdays to Thursdays, depending on the weather, as we try to maximize students’ experiences.

English

Students are tested three times throughout a 4 week course – once at the beginning to assess their level of English, and mid-way and at the end to ensure they are learning effectively.

Presentation morning: We believe that students can only improve their confidence in English if they practice speaking in front of their peers and in front of the staff. We have an innovative presentation morning, whereby students are in mixed-ability groups, coming up with an idea for a new gadget, idea, product, game, etc. They have a lot of freedom in what they create, but they must present their idea to the ‘panel’ (senior staff) in their groups, to explain it, and justify why their product would be so popular to the world. Some years the products have a theme, such as a new environmental gadget, but other years students have free-reign as to where their imaginations can take them. This morning is vital to learning English and public speaking skills, and helps students to gain confidence to freely talk without notes in front of those older than themselves from a young age.

Each day, lessons are structured thematically, so that students gain a broad range of vocabulary and can practice their English through repetition daily. Some themes last one day, others might last two or three, depending on how in depth students are able to work within the topic. Each student gains a varied and broad knowledge of English, and learns ‘colloquial’ phrases so that they can feel comfortable conversing at the end of the course. Themes throughout the course are likely to include the following:

  • British culture
  • Environment
  • World records
