The incredible feeling of riding along a wall of water, feeling one with the forces of nature, cannot be described – Surfing is a Passion. Sotavento Surf Centre takes care of both beginners who want to initiate themselves to the sport and intermediate and advanced surfers who want to improve their skills.

Beginner Courses

The surf lessons are based on years of experience and the modern teaching methods of the British Surfing Association (BSA), and there is a constant monitoring of the quality of the lessons to make them better. Every day we choose the surf beach based on your surfing skills. Only optimal wave and wind conditions according to your level lets you make huge advances in learning to surf.

There is a big range of new and modern surfing equipment (wetsuits, surfboards, etc.), to be able to give every surfer the surf equipment which best fits their skills. All surf coaches are certified by the British Surfing Association (BSA). They are also qualified lifeguards certified by the Surf Life Saving Association (SLSA). More than riding a wave, it is the fun of discovering new places, adventure and making friends around the globe. We want you to become a part of it!

Advanced Courses

Apart from the beginner’s course, the surf school specializes in intermediate and advanced surf lessons as well as surf guiding. The advanced lessons – often neglected from other surf schools – are our strengths! We therefore recommend intermediate or advanced surf courses to keep on progressing in your surf. All surf coaches for these programme are certified for advanced lessons (min. BSA Level 2 Instructor). They also have at least 3 years experience specifically in teaching advanced surfers. Almost every surf school offers viedocoaching, but just a few are really doing it. All surf lesson includes, depending on your package, at least one detailed video coaching. Whether you are a complete beginner or a professional surfer, movement correction in slow motion makes every surfers surfing improve a lot, in a minimum amount of time. The surf courses also include interesting technical and theory lessons, from understanding currents and learning to negotiate them, tides, wind, wave development and surf technique, to surfboard shaping and the history of surfing.

For the intermediate and experienced surfers, surf guides will take them to different surf spots according to their surfing skills and swell conditions. The surf guides will carefully explain the surf spot and show you the currents and where to get in and out the water. All surf guiding packages include surf equipment (surfboard, wetsuit etc.), coaching in the water, theory and practical instruction, video coaching, transfers to the most suitable spot, transfers to your accommodation, ferry tickets to the neighbouring islands of Isla Lobos, Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and insurance.

LOCATION & GETTING HERE

Location

Canary Islands

Known as the ”Fortunate Islands”, the Canary Islands enjoy a permanent spring like, subtropical climate cooled by the Ocean breeze and the Trade Winds, with warm waters and consistent swell most of the year. Off the coast of Morocco, Spanish territory and outpost of the European Union, the Canary Islands are but a two hour flight from Madrid and the mainland. The “Hawaii of the Atlantic”, as the islands are referred to by surfers, this volcanic archipelago is formed by seven islands. Main surf destinations are the two major islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and the less populated islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest island but least populated of the Canarian archipelago. Ninety kilometres off Morocco and the African coast, it also enjoys the best climate of all the islands. The large number of sunny days and minimal rainfalls, as well as the topography of the terrain, has created Europe’s only desert. Fuerteventura has the longest beach of the archipelago, formed by fine white sand from the nearby Sahara desert. The island boasts three natural parks: the Dunas de Corralejo and Isla de Lobos to the north and the Jandia Peninsula to the south. In total, 40% of the island has been declared a national park and its natural state has been almost completely preserved.

Jandia

Jandia is the peninsula at the southern end of Fuerteventura and includes the resorts of Costa Calma, where Sotavento Surf Centre is located. The highest point on Fuerteventura is to be found on the peninsula. Once upon a time, Jandia was an island separated from the rest of Fuerteventura by the sea. The deposits of sand, blown in by the nearby Sahara desert, linked the two in a narrow isthmus, creating some of the most stunning beaches in the world. The area between the Barlovento (windward) coast to the west and the Sotavento (leeward) coast to the east from the Jandia Natural Park, a vast expanse of protected sand dunes and barren hills.

Climate

Sub tropical, with warm winters and hot summers. Warm waters all year ! Best waves in winter, when the north and western swells come in.
