The Beaches

KutaBeach.. Suitable for beginners. Best time to surf is mid tide. Avoid very low tides, because waves tend to dump and close out. Water is also shallow, so more chance of injury. One draw back can be the crowd, however Kuta is a long beach stretching to Seminyak. So it’s not as bad as other popular surfing beaches else where around the world. Best to surf between April and October where it’s mostly off shore wind.

Uluwatu.. Most famous of all breaks, Uluwatu consists of a few spots working at different tides and swells. When its small even less experienced surfers can have a nab, as long as your comfortable with a crowd and don’t drop in! When it’s big it’s better left to the regulars! Most consistent wave is to the left of Ulu’s cave, ideal at mid to high tide. Tend to close out at low tide.

Padang Padang.. World class. Most days pretty tame and surfable for less experienced surfers at mid to high tide as long as you pull out before the inside section. But appearance can deceive. A solid swell can turn it to Bali’s “Pipeline”! Super fast, very hollow, powerful, very shallow and razor sharp reef towards the inside section. Hold up to above 12ft. Best left to the Pro’s.

Bingin.. Bingin is a perfect machine wave that works best around mid tide. Waves are hollow, fast and provide consistent short left hand barrels. Though the shallow reef can be unforgiving at dead low tide. Only problem, always busy with small take off spot! Suitable for experienced surfers.

DreamLand.. A brake with longer left and a short right hander. Surfable at low to dead low tide and works well when there is an average swell above 3ft coming. When the swell is over 7ft, the waves tends to be unpredictable and closes out. Soft, fat waves and deep water make it suitable for those with some learning experience behind their back. Only down side, the place can get very busy. One consolation the beach is beautiful, so are the views!

Canggu.. Soft & fun waves that can give you some power. Long lefts and shorter rights, best surfed at mid to high tide. Those of you who just picked up surfing be aware the waves in Canggu can be fast and hollow and fairly challenging at times. You need to be comfortable with waves in Kuta before you think of trying Canggu. Don’t forget it’s always very busy too. At low tide left inside section can get shallow.

LOCATION & GETTING HERE

Location

Indonesia

The emerald islands of the Indonesian archipelago have for centuries lured everyone, from missionaries to pirates, traders and more recently to tourists and backpackers. The sandalwood and spice breezes, magnificent beaches, mountains and volcanoes of these islands acting as a magnet to both ancient and modern travellers. But Indonesia is also the ultimate surfer’s paradise, with hundreds of islands and unknown waves waiting to be discovered.

Bali

Although Bali is relatively small (90 miles long and 48 miles wide), it is densely populated and culturally and economically one of the most important islands of Indonesia. Bali has more than 3 million people, a great variety of countryside and probably more than 10,000 temples.

While Bali may no longer be the “last frontier” surf destination, it still lies at the heart of the Indonesian surf experience, the quality of its waves and “Bali Hai” lifestyle attracting surfers from all over the world. Bali is an island of high volcanoes, rice fields, majestic temples and beautiful beaches which has maintained its traditions very well alive, but you will equally find McDonalds, surf shops, cheap restaurants, bars and plenty of nightlife in Kuta.

Kuta Beach

Kuta is the tourist Mecca of Bali, popular mainly among the young and adventurous. Coconut trees line the sand beach as far as the eyes can see towards the north stopped by the runway of Denpasar’s airport far in the west. A short walk away north, the waves will invite to surfing.

Rapid development and an influx of visitors haven’t kept the surfers away and Kuta still remains one of Bali’s best surfing beaches and a great place to enjoy a beach lifestyle. The sunset in Kuta is  breathtaking. On the south, the beach is fenced by the airport’s runway, which gives the visitors a breathtaking landing experience.

Kuta Beach bustles with tourists’ vendors and locals. It’s the most popular beach in Bali and the island’s number one party zone. The beach stretches as far north as the eyes can see.

While the surfers are still part of the Kuta scene, it’s the shopping, nightlife and partying  that attracts visitors. There’s a huge choice of accommodation, restaurants and entertainment.

Climate

Tropical. Warm waters all year long ! Dry season from June to September – Wet season from October to May, Bali is a tropical island with temperatures ranging from 21 to 33°C. Dry season lasts from April until September, and that means sunshine every day. Wet season lasts from December until March, and at least a short daily shower is common. It might get a bit cooler at night, but still, temperatures mostly remain tropical. So don’t take too many clothes!

Except for one long sleeve outfit and the right shoes for hiking the volcano, shorts and tee shirts are more than enough. Besides, shopping is a must on Bali! Water temperature is a constant 28°C, so you will mostly surf in shorts. At chilly morning sessions you will sometimes wear a lycra shirt, but a neoprene shorty is not really necessary.
