Quiksilver sponsors this surfcamp on the Basque Coast for Teenagers aged 10 to 16. The camp runs from end of June to en August, as well as at Easter. Full week, seven days, seven nights, with 24 hours supervision. The camp includes accomodation, 3 meals a day, and daily surf course. Special weeks with  "Girls Only" surfcamp are also offered. Extra activities include outdoor activities, barbecues, yoga clases, watching surf videos and theory lessons on surf’s history, metereology, biology and marine geology. 

A thirty minute metro ride from downtown Bilbao, the surfcamp enjoys a pleasant setting in the small cliff-edge village of Barrika, on the Bay of Biscay. The Surfhouse is a charming refurbished 16 Century listed Basque farmhouse with a nice and warm atmosphere. The reputed Surf School has been functioning since 1988 and caters for all levels of surf, specializing in teaching teenagers.

Founded in 1988, the school has catered for over 4,000 people over the years. Its founder has spent 10 years in Europe’s Top-10 and today combines the management of the school with being Quiksilver team-manager. All monitors hold an official surf teacher and lifeguard license. The school is open to all levels of surf, from beginners to advanced. Theoretical and practical classes. The school sepcializes in teenager training.

Surf Conditions

Extending between Biarritz and Bilbao, the Basque Country is the finest surf coast in Spain and possibly in Europe. One of Europe’s best lefts, Mundaka is a powerful rivermouth break in the picturesque Gernika estuary, a natural area protected by the UNESCO and dominated by the village’s church ! Another world class reef break is Meniakoz, a very big and powerful right. Further good spots in the area include Bakio and Sopelana, both regional classics with left and right beach breaks accessible to all, and Zarautz, a reputed beach break left and right venue of an annual WQS competition.

The Location

Flanked by the Atlantic and the Pyrenees mountain ranges, the Basque Country occupies the north-west corner of the Iberian Peninsula, stradling the French border. One of the most industrialised region in Spain, its inhabitants have nevertheless managed to preserve through the centuries an age-old autochthonous culture which most valuable jewel is its language, Euskera, a pre-Indo European tongue whose mysterious origin has never been established. Euskadi, meaning Basque Country in the native language, is part of the Green Spain. The landscape is formed by a cliff-lined coast with quaint fishing villages and mountainous hinterland covered by green forests, offering a contrasting image to the dry and desert like central Spain.

Bilbao is the industrial, financial and intellectual capital of the Basque Country. One of Spain’s largest city and the country’s major harbour, Bilbao has recently turned into a popular touristic destination through a complete architectural revival featuring Frank Gehry’s stiking Guggenheim Museum, Norman Foster's impressive subway system and Santiago Calatrava’s spectacular new airport terminal.
