SURFING IN THE ALGARVE

The Southwestern tip of the Algarve is a wild and uncrowded stretch of coast yet minutes away from the famous resorts of Lagos and Sagres, both with plenty of nightlife. It is a surfing destination unrivaled anywhere in Europe and unique in the way that it will give you a genuine taste of surfing lifestyle. The Western coast is one of the major surfing destinations for serious surfers from around the globe as the long Atlantic swels sweeping onto the west coast beaches offer ideal surfing conditions. Wave size and quality range from average to epic, with an assortment of reefs and beach breaks.
The Algarve is also the warmest place in Portugal and the most touristic one, with plenty of night live and attractions. The surf itself is surrounded by a breathtaking scenery, with steep reddish cliffs, wide sandy beaches and no real estate developments or seaside resorts in sight. The whole area is protected and part of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. The access to the beaches is usually by dirt tracks twisting through a spectacular scenery.
Regarded by many surfers as Europe's great hidden secret for surfing for both beginners and experts, West Algarve offers you blue skies, crystal clear waters and uncrowded waves. Thanks to its unique location on Europe’s southwestern-most cape, Sagres enjoys the best of both coasts, Southern and Western, always providing a surfing alternative according to the swell and within a maximum thirty minute drive. The West Coast receives swells from the north and southeast. This coast has consistent waves throughout the year and a variety of point breaks, mostly sandy. The South Coast receives swells from the south and large swells from the west. This region is not only known for its natural beauty but also the quality, perfection and consistency of its waves in winter.
SURF SEASONS
From May till October, when the swells iare smaller, the surfguides take you to the chosen beach of the day in the West coast, usually good beach breaks.

In winter from October till May, when the swells are bigger, surfaris involve more driving and much more adventure, and an entire new dimension opens up in the South Coast! Reef Break and secret spots... In this season, surfaris for beginners, intermediateand experienced surfers are very exciting and you will be able to explore many different beaches along the entire Southern Coast from Sagres to Lagos. While the west coast can be maxing out, there is beautiful beaches on the south coast breaking perfect glassy head-high waves. e.g. Most of these you will not find without a surfguide.
SURF COURSES

Surf green waves going left, surf green waves going right. Videoanalysis.

Algarve
The Algarve is situated in the southern most part of Portugal, stretching along the Atlantic between the Spanish border and Cabo Sao Vicente, Europe's south western most point. It was the last territory to be conquered back from the Moors in 1292 and their presence is still very much present in the architecture of the region with its whitewashed houses standing against the red earth and greenery. Sheltered from the northern winds by the Monchique range and facing south, the Algarve enjoys a privileged climate all year round, in brightly coloured and fertile surroundings covered with orange, fig and almond groves. The southern coastline is formed by a long stretch of fabulous beaches, only broken up by impressive reddish cliffs. The west coast is wilder and the sea rougher, with a string of solitary coves and beaches accessed through dirt tracks.
Algarve's capital Faro enjoys a central location on the coast and the old town has many historical monuments, including a medieval wall. Further west, Lagos is a well known touristic destination on the banks of a river estuary and its old quarters are enclosed within 15th century walls. Lagos is Algarve's party capital with plenty of bars and Ozzies, Kiwis, Canadians and Americans bar hoping. Also worth a visit is the little town of Monchique and its famous thermal spa, nestling in the Serra de Monchique mountain range, which highest point at nearly 1,000 meters enjoys splendid panoramic views across the Algarve to the Atlantic.
Sagres lies at the western end of the Algarve, next to Cabo Sao Vicente. It was here that five centuries ago, Prince Henrique set up a school of navigation which has played a crucial role in the Portuguese discoveries. The town has a magnificent fortress built in the 14th century with a giant 43 meters compass rose. Cabo Sao Vicente fortress is poised on high cliffs facing the Atlantic. It was built on the original Roman site of "Promontorium Sacrum" - or sacred promontory, as they believe the cape was the end of the world, being the southwestern-most point of Europe.
Climate
Atlantic/Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers. Due to its exposure on a peninsula, the region enjoys excellent swell and wind conditions year round for the practice of surf or kitesurf.
Some Famous Spots
- Praia do Amado (West): Most famous surf spot. Large sandy beach with dunes ideal for beginners - this is were many surf schools do their teaching. Only holds up to two meters. Respect locals !
- Vale Figueiras (West): When the bank are on it is by far the best beach breaks in the Algarve. Huge beach that goes from Arrifana to Bordeira.
- Carrapateira/Bordeira (West): Adjacent to Praia do Amado. Splendid surf spot with sandy beach accessed through a lagoon surrounded by dunes. Perfect for beginners, but watch out for the undercurrent. Great left handers if the banks are on!
- Arrifana (West): North of Carrapateira, a scenic surf spot and beach showcased by a high cliff topped by a picturesque whitewashed village. Beach break, usually half the size of other west coast beaches - good when others are too big. To the right of the beach, you have a good reef break, good right, but it only breaks with at least 1.5 meter swell. Watch out for the "hamburger" or "Kangaroo" rock. Only for Kamikazes !
- Sagres (West/South): Europe's southwestern most point, this peninsula is surrounded by the Atlantic to the south and the west, providing numerous surf spots and surfing options according to swell conditions. Respect locals !
- Meia Praia (Lagos), Portimao and Faro (South Coast): On the Algarve's southern coast. Surf spots with good breaks offering a good alternative to the western coast when the swell is too big there, or when the SE wind (Levante) blows.

I would just like to share our feedback on our summer camp in Portugal. it was out first ever surf camp and went in somewhat blind and I followed your judgement and was happy I did so. We really had a great, great time. The house with our private bathroom was perfect and exactly to our taste and liking as a family, (the camp's main house wouldn't have been right for us) the food was wonderful but mostly it was the teaching and the teachers. The teaching was professional, progressive, motivational, methodical and fun, really good and exactly what I was wanting as any prior teaching I'd had had all been too lose and random. All the teachers were all so nice and the vibe was perfect and we were so touched at how they were all with our son leo, he caught his first big wave under their great judgement, really cool and inspiring.
I wonder wether it would be at all possible if you could pass on a message to Sonia, one of the teachers, I never got to say a big thank you for everything and a goodbye from us.
Once again the surf camp was brilliant and we will only have good things to say about Nomad Surfers, we are even thinking about going to your Bali surf camp
Best of wishes

Everything went fine. I am writing you already from the surfcamp in Vale Figueiros. Thanks so long for your assistance. I like your place, and the warmheartly welcome.
To complete the payment, let me know your bank account. I'd prefer a wire transfer, since I don't have that much money with me and no card as well.
My girlfriend will transfer 390.- to your account. So let me know.
Take care in Indonisa, as I heard.
Here it is still cold weather. Hopefully warm up soon.

I will come to Portugal (SW-corner, somewhere between Aljezur and Sagres) in May to finally learn surfing. I heard good things about nomad surfers. A few questions:
• I could start a course 9.5. or 10.5.. Which iof the houses, that you cooperate with is available around that time? I am a bloody beginner (surfed a couple of times a few years ago, but definitely need instructions from scratch)
• My girl will come with me, but won’t surf. What would be the price for her? We would want a room just for the two of us.
• What kind of wetsuit shall I bring (3/2 or 4/3)?
• I will need to check my email once in a while. Is there a spot in the neighbourhood?
Looking forward to hear from you
Best
Stephan
