SEIGNOSSE HOSSEGOR Surf Lodge & Camp

Extending in the southwestern corner of France, from Bordeaux to the Pyrenees mountains and the Spanish border, Aquitaine enjoys superb surfing conditions along its 160 miles of Atlantic Ocean coast. On the southern reaches of the Silver Coast, Hossegor is Europe’s surf Mecca and a world famous spot annual venue of the WCT Quiksilver Pro, while a short drive further south on the Basque Coast lies Biarritz, a reputed 19th century seaside resort and cradle of surf in Europe.

Nestling between pine forests, tidal lakes and the Atlantic Ocean, amidst a nature reserve just north of Hossegor, Seignosse Surf Lodge is a family run camp. The camp combines atmospheric accommodation in a 300 year-old farmhouse with spacious bedrooms, wooden mezzanines and a large lounge with fireplace and pool table. The Surfcamp teaching method relies upon a thorough knowledge of the marine environment as well as the more technical aspect of surfing to become an accomplished and autonomous surfer. Ideal for beginners. Special Yoga weeks available (dates on request)

The Surf Lodge

The Surf Lodge

Seignosse Surf Lodge is an 18th century farmhouse which has been completely renovated, offering a mix of authenticity and originality. The heart of the Surfhouse is the 100 square meter great room, its open space concept distributed around a central sculptured fireplace inviting comradeship and conversations amongst guests. The lounge also features a pool table and a DVD corner. The house has spacious bedrooms with wooden mezzanines, sleeping one to four persons, two of them with private bathrooms dedicated to couples.

You will start the day with a generous breakfast taken on the terrace or in the lounge before you hit the beach and catch some waves. After surf include the use of the private skatepark as well as bikes and canoes, ideal to discover the natural wonders of the area, one of Europe largest forest and nature preserve. Last but not least, chill out and relax in the warm hydro-massage pool, enjoy the new steamer or ask for a body massage in the tree house. For dinner, you can either use the fully equipped kitchen at the surfhouse or grab a bike to dine in town or bring back home a take-away.

The Surf School

Seignosse Surfcamp teaching method relies upon a thorough knowledge of the coastline and the marine environment as well as the more technical aspect of surfing to become an accomplished and autonomous surfer. You will be taught beginner and intermediate surfing techniques while discovering this beautiful stretch of coast and its famous waves. You will also learn ocean safety skills, including surf rescue and first aid, how to read the ocean with a trained eye, handle rip currents and long shore currents, as well as how to time waves and the judgement skills needed for catching waves safely. Intense practical classes including body surfing and warm up inspired by yoga postures. Theory lessons are arranged twice a week, either at the beach or at the house according to weather conditions.  Ideal for beginners.

Silver Coast Surf

France’s Silver Coast is dotted with a string of fabulous surf spots such as Lacanau, Arcachon, Biscarosse, Capbreton, Boucau and Hossegor, annual venue of the WCT Quiksilver Pro. Extending form the Gironde to the Adour estuary, this almost straight ruler on the Atlantic boasts 160 miles of uninterrupted sandy beach, ideal for surfing and bordered by dunes and pine forests. From Easter to All Saint's Day, the coast has the best potential for surf, with good unridden barrels and the steadiest swell anywhere in Europe.

The surfing quality of the wave is due to the depth and funnel shape of the Bay of Biscay, that rises abruptly in front of the coast, and the numerous small rivers and stream mouths dotting its length shaping good sand breaks. Due to the changing winds and the huge tidal range, the waves can evolve with incredible speed. The sandbars orientation favor rights, while lefts tend to be very hollow because of the consistent North to South undertow. But the good sandbars can be destroyed by the winter storms and the main surfing problem is the lack of shelter when the sea gets rough.od sandbars can be destroyed by the winter storms and the main surfing problem is the lack of shelter when the sea gets rough.

Surf Spots

There are waves all year round. Even during the summer when these are small, the area around Hossegor is exposed to the swell which makes surfing possible almost every day. All these spots are beach breaks, so it’s safe to walk within hitting rocks, and waves can break right or left. They are exposed to the same offshore winds: East, Southeast and Northeast.

Most famous spots:

  • Les Casernes: Can be ridden until 2m-2m50 (6-7ft) according to sandbars. Some long rides. Works all tides.

The Location

The Location

Aquitaine

Extending in the southwestern corner of France from the Gironde Estuary - near Bordeaux, to the Pyrenees and the Spanish border, Aquitaine has a very varied landscape and cultural background. A former Roman province, the destiny of Aquitaine would be tied to the English crown for over three centuries - the legendary English King Richard "the Lion-Heart" spent most if his life here with his wife Eleonor of Aquitaine. Natural landscapes range from Perigord's forests and groves, to the famous Bordeaux wine growing region, the extensive Landes forest, the miles long sandy beaches of the Silver Coast, and the green pastures of Bearn and the Basque Country in the Pyrenees mountain range. Aquitaine's Perigord region is known as "the cradle of humanity" for its many prehistoric sites, shelters and caves with engravings and paintings from the Cro-Magnon era, some 20.000 years ago. The most famous one are the Lascaux Caves.

Silver Coast & Landes

Extending from the Gironde estuary - near Bordeaux, to the Adour estuary - near Biarritz,  the Côte d'Argent (Silver Coast) is  a top surfing destination as well as a protected stretch of pristine coastline bordered by the huge pine forests of the Landes. Its shore is formed by a 160 mile long beach only interrupted by the string of tidal lakes doting the coast. At the heart of the coast, Arcachon is a turn of the century seaside resort located on the major tidal lake of the coast - a favourite windsurfing spot. This seaside resort is reputed for its oysters and the Dune du Pyla, Europe's highest sand dunes culminating at 118 metres and perfect to try some sand boarding. Behind this sand bar and stretching inland from the Atlantic coast, the forest of the Landes (Moors) is a vast expense of pines, cork oaks, broom and heather. Late French President Mitterand favourite retreat, this region was once a sandy and marshy area, unhealthy and unfit for farming. But in the 18th century and under the leadership of Napoleon, the area was planted with pine trees to drain the soil and stop the progression of the sand dunes, creating one of the largest and richest forest in Europe. A perfect place for hiking, biking and riding.

Hossegor

Nestling amidst the emerald pine forest of the Landes, caressed by the ocean breeze, lined with endless fine sandy beaches and a 250 hectare tidal lake, Hossegor reflects the image of an old traditional seaside resort. Hossegor is situated in the heart of a region where nature rhymes with culture all year round, a place which lives on the rhythm of events, Classical music festival, Harley Davidson festival, golf competitions, WCT surf championship, European kite festival, Enduro on the beach and Pelote Basque Open, plus a summer season in full swing where music of all types drifts across the evening air. The atmosphere in the Pubs, Piano bars, Cafes, Restaurants and Disco's are as in the rest of the South of France, very friendly but with a definite surfing atmosphere.

Climate

Southern Atlantic climate, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.

Hi Alain
The Camp was the highlight on our Europe trip! My 19 year olds thought so too. Even though the surf was flat ( which suited me and my daughter) my son who already surfs thought it was great because the people were cool. Kevin's camp is so friendly and relaxed. He has so many great friends hanging about making the place seem fun. His mate Paul cooks the most divine healthy food. They went out of their way to entertain us - like extra trips to Hossegor lake for paddle boarding and a trip to Biarritz and San Sebastian! I think they were great surfing teachers too. If there was a rating I'd give them more than A+!!!
Cheers
Susie
