Bluff Lodge
Hidden within the trees lining the breathtaking bay next to Bluff Beach on Bocas' main island Isla Colon, the Eco Lodge provides a quiet refuge for nature lovers, beach combers, divers and surfers - it is just steps away from a reputed surf spot. There are two excellent spots on Isla Colon, Bluff Beach and The Bump. Apart from surf, bird watching, swimming in cristal clear waters, snorkelling or just lazing around are some of the favourite occupations at the Lodge.
The Lodge

At Bluff Eco Lodge, energy is generated by the sun and wind, water collected by a rain catchment system and grey water used to water the gardens. Accommodation consists of 6 rooms in the Casa Azul, one-bedroom apartment at beach level in Casa Verde and 2 beachside private Cottages. All rooms have balconies with hammock and chairs, bathrooms with hot water, priavte/shared kitchen, mosquito nets and ceiling fans. The Lodge has a dining room serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
There are FOUR surf spots within walking distance of the lodge: Bluff, Dumpers and Punch.
Dumpers is a reef bottom left hander. Steep drops and super powerful with a tube you could fit a dune buggy in. The wave is kind of short though so when you come out of the tube, you can hit the lip once or twice or do a roundhouse cutback and then the wave ends on top of a rock on the inside. You could compare this place to the heavy breaks of Tahiti. There is an inside break that is a longer ride, but not as tubular and it only breaks when Dumpers is about 7 to 8 feet. This place is one of the most popular spots at Bocas, but rarely gets over 5 people in the water at once. You can normally surf here alone with your buddies. Bring your surf booties because the reef here is pretty gnarly for getting in and out of the water. The surf can get as big as 12 feet, (better have balls of steel) but that's when the inside Dumpers starts really firing. Dumpers is a 10-minute walk from the lodge.
Punch is a reef bottom right and left break. It can get really good here, and you can get slotted in the tube on certain sections or hit the lip or do roundhouse cutbacks or airs. There are 2 or 3 different peaks you can take off from. This wave is more mellow than Dumpers and not quite as powerful, but it packs a punch anyways! Most of the less experienced surfers go out here because it is a fun wave and less dangerous than most of the other breaks at Bocas. You can usually get the place alone, but at times there are as much as 5 to 7 surfers out, depending on the day. We have surfed it as big as 12 feet. This wave holds size well. The bigger the more perfect with an incredible tube section. Punch is located about 20 minutes away, on foot, from the Lodge.

Carenero Lodge
The Surf Lodge is located on the tropical island Carenero Key, between the Colon and Bastimentos islands, just five minutes by water taxi from the town of Bocas, on the archipelago's main island Isla Colon. With a population of only 450 inhabitants, Carenero has no roads or cars and offers a very peaceful and relaxing place to get away from it all. The island is covered by a tropical forest teeming with exotic birds and skirted by unspoiled beaches. Surf wise, there is an excellent reef break on Carenero key itself, which offers good surfing conditions year round.
The Lodge
Nestling in a coconut grove, the Carenero Key Surf Lodge offers seven beautiful rooms with various layouts catering for every specific need. Each room is spacious and equipped with air conditioning, comfortable bed and private tiled bathrooms with hot water. The house is surrounded by a wooded deck with large French windows opening up onto the lush rain forest and peering through coconut trees to the Caribbean sea. The hotel has all modern amenities such as Direct TV and internet/fax connections. The Lodge has no dining facilities, but there are three restaurants within walking distance (2 to 5 min.)
The Surf
Carenero is one of the best spots in Bocas del Toro, a left hand reef bottom point break wave that breaks for about 100 yards along the edge of the reef. The bigger the swell, the better the waves connects a perfect barrell, This wave is very powerful and has this amazing barrel section which last for several seconds.

The Archipelago
Bocas del Toro
The Bocas del Toro archipelago is a collection of ten tropical islands on the Caribbean coast of Panama, near the border with Costa Rica. Warm, turquoise waters, nice beaches fringed by coconut trees, tropical rain forest teeming with exotic birds and coral reefs for snorkelling provide and ideal background to get away from it all. Bocas del Toro has been the shooting location of Survival Series of no less than 12 different countries, including France, Spain and Italy !
The archipelago was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502 and the main island named after him (Isla Colon). At the turn of the century, the main town, Bocas on Isla Colon, was the headquarters of the US United Fruit Company. Boasting 25,000 inhabitants, the town had six consuls and five newspapers. But its heyday ended in the 1920's, when banana blight put an end to this thriving commercial centre.
Most of the stately colonial buildings and parks from that time still remain, giving the town its special flair. Bocas has many different European styles bars, restaurants and hotels - most are run by Europeans who have moved to Bocas and started these businesses. The town attract a lot of hippies, backpackers, divers, surfers and ecologically friendly travellers.
Surfing Bocas del Toro
The surf in Panama is a year-round experience, with the most consistent conditions occurring on the Pacific coast between March through November, and on the Atlantic Coast from November through April. But what makes a trip to Panama an especially fine wintertime option is the prevailing wind: blowing out of the north during the dry season between December and April, meaning clean offshores.
A short flight from Panama City, Bocas Del Toro is the surfing capital of the southwest Caribbean. The archipelago formed by ten coastal islands offers excellent surf conditions nearly all year. December until April is the surf season in Bocas, when the archipelago receives strong swell. June and July are fine as well, due to wind and cold fronts to the north. August is generally smaller, but there is still some surf in Bocas. September and October are normally flat on the Caribbean coast, but sometimes they get some swell during those months with the hurricanes in the Caribbean pushing swells in.
The best and more reliable swell season is December-February, when wave heights average 3-6 feet during this season, but can get up to 8-15 feet on the biggest swells. However, it can also go dead flat for days at ANY time of the year even in peak season.
The green colour of the water and clarity of the ocean in Bocas is just incredible, combined with the abundant jungle backdrop and tropical sun provides a beautiful setting for your surfing experience. The most ordinary waves are reef breaks, but there are also some beach breaks, tubing, shallow and can be risky at times! There are few rights but the lefts are widely ranged. Bocas del Toro’s waves normally favor short boards.
Climate
Torpical, the weather on Bocas is quite unpredictable. Storms and dense cloud cover are usual, but so are spurts of sun and beautiful calm weather. The most frequent wind direction is NW to NE, and that is fine for many of the breaks in Bocas that have a more easterly or southerly position. As for the weather, the reliability of the surf is also irregular and difficult to predict, because the swells come up abruptly and without much warning, and go down just as suddenly.
