SANDBOARDING

There are sand dunes all around Florianopolis, but the most famous is close to Joaquina beach and it was named after a famous Hawaiian wave: Waimea. One side is a very fast drop; the other offers different angles of slope for different skills or guts. Boards are similar to snowboards and can be rented at the bottom of the dunes for about U$ 2 for a few hours, which is more than enough since the only way back up is walking.

KITESURFING

The island of Santa Catarina is considered an outdoor gymnasium for extreme sports. Just off the coast of mailand Brazil, to which it is connected by a bridge in the town of Florianopolis, the island is about 50 km. long and 20 km. wide. Its geography features a landscape sprinkled with lakes, sand dunes, forests and small islands all along the coast. For that reason the options you have for sports are endless. Surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, sandboarding, paragliding, hangliding, horseriding, rockclimbing, mountainbiking are the most practiced in this sports paradise. Florianopolis – or “Desterro” as it was originally called – was founded in 1700 and settled fifty years later by immigrants from the Portuguese mid-Atlantic islands of the Azores. Since then, it’s gradually developed from being a sleepy provincial backwater into a sleepy state capital. With the construction of the bridges linking the island with the mainland, Florianopolis as a port has all but died, and today the city thrives as an administrative, commercial and tourist centre. Land reclamation for a multi-lined highway and new bus terminals has totally eliminated the character of the old seafront. Despite all the changes, though, the late nineteenth-century pastel-colored, stuccoes buildings still recall faint “old world” images, while the relaxed, small-town atmosphere provides a total contrast to the excitement of São Paulo or Rio.

The cuisine of the island of Florianopolis has been greatly influenced by its past and present cultures. The impressions of their dishes are truly unique based on these different habits. Seafood is the city’s specialty. The oysters, cultivated in the south of the island can be consumed fresh out of the sea. The shrimp is the favorite aperitif, prepared and served in different ways. Another characteristic of Florianopolis are the simple and cozy restaurants, close to the beaches and maintained by the fishermen. The city also has more sophisticated restaurants and fast food places, which serve international dishes, burgers, pizzas, sushi and so on.

Climate

Florianopolis has a subtropical climate with rainfall well distributed throughout the year. The seasons are well defined. Summer is hot and has the highest rainfall. Spring and Fall are similar, with spring usually very windy. Winter is cool and with low precipitation. Cold fronts coming from the Southern Atlantic and Antarctica pass frequently in the region, bringing rain followed by days of strong southern winds.

The Trip

Meio da Joaquina Beach, Santa Catarina Island

Florianopolis "Floripa" (City), 20 min. drive

Florianopolis International Airport (FLN), 20 min. drive
Major airlines with daily flights to Rio and Sao:
www.voegol.com.br
www.tam.com.br
www.oceanair.com.br

A word of caution here: Both San Paulo and Rio have more than one major airport. To ensure that you arrive to Florianopolis on time with all your luggage in tow, it is crucial to make sure your connecting flight leaves from the same airport your international flight arrives at. Experienced travelers caution against transferring between different airports.

Road Transport
Buses are totally safe and cheap (for about aU$1 you can go to any beach). Taxis can easily be found and are safe too, but make sure you come up to a price before you leave to your destination. In Florianopolis hitchhiking is still safe and a lot of people actually stop. Car and motorcycle rental are also available with prices starting around U$ 20 a day.

Safety
Brazil is no more dangerous than anywhere in Europe or North America and violent crimes against tourists or foreign visitors are extremely rare. Brazil is also politically stable with no natural enemies and no terrorist activities. The crime tourists are most likely to fall victim to in Brazilian cities is robbery and pick pocketing, so do not leave your belongings unattended and do not wear jewelry in the streets. Always leave travelers checks, passports, air tickets and the like in the hotel safe deposit box. Visitors should however carry some form of ID, such as a photocopy of their passports, with them at all times. Florianopolis is the safest place in Brazil. People jogging at night, and girls hitch hiking. You cant even do that in Europe!

Health
Brazil has an excellent network of private hospitals and clinics in the major cities. Private medical assistance can be more expensive, but Brazil has a public health service that will look after foreign visitors in an emergency. Medical Insurance is recomended for all visitors. Usually vaccinations against Yellow Fever are not required when traveling to Brazil

Money
The Brazilian currency is called “Real” (“heh-ALL”). The Atm and Bank network throughout Brazil will accept most of the bank/credit card network/operators. Cash and traveler checks can be exchanged in banks and exchange shops.

Hi Elaine,

I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to tell you how awesome my trip
to Floripa was back in August this year.

Rodrigo was an awesome host, great tour guide and actually a really
nice guy to hang out with - he took great care of Aaron and I. He made
sure that experienced the best surf available on the island, ate well
and saw some really cool parts that Floripa had to offer. It is very
hard to pick a favourite part of the trip but I think for me it was
the trek into the forest/jungle to find a more remote beach and some
incredible surf. Also Rodrigo hooked us up with some Jiu Jitsu lessons
with Xandão Barros who was also amazing.

I am now sitting in a very cold London wish I could be back there
learning to surf and hanging out with all the great people I met.

I guess I just wanted to say thank you for the trip and hopefully I'll
return one day further down.

Thank again,
Alkashina
